  2. Polymer Electrolyte Membrane • Membrane used in fuel cells as proton conductor. • Important properties include: • Durability and stability under operating conditions • High proton conductivity; no electronic conductivity • Low reactant permeability (avoid reduced fuel efficiency) • Water uptake (membrane needs water to function) • Compatibility with membrane electrode assembly • Fuel cell efficiency highly influenced by membrane electrode assembly; membrane important factor in viability of fuel cells as an energy source.

  4. Dental cavity-filling materials Current Issues: Notorious reputation for shrinking upon curing and even leak over time as the polymer cracks due to stresses When such polymers are treated with heat or light to cure them, they generally become more rigid and strained as they shrink Research direction: the new polymer must maintain its strength even while showing reduced stress and strain when exposed to light reduction of composite shrinkage Current products: UltraSeal XT Plususes Bis-GMA without dimethacrylate and was found to have a shrinkage of 5.63%, 30 minutes after curing. On the other hand, this same study found that Heliomolar, which uses Bis-GMA, UDMA and decandioldimethacrylate, had a shrinkage of 2.00%, 30 minutes after curing. 5. New Plastics and Energy • New polymers consisting of polythiophen and long branched alky groups. • The Polymer is easily applied by roll printing techniques. A more efficient way for industry to produce more solar cells at a lower cost. • Makes new devices where both power harnessing and electronics are needed in a single component. • Enables thinner and lighter electronic components and organic solar cells.
