The Chinese were the main racial group that migrated to Singapore in the 19th Century. • Most came here driven by poverty in their homeland, China, with the intention to earn enough money for themselves and their families, while others came just to work, as there were many job opportunities in Singapore. • They wanted to return home; but eventually, they decided to stay and started families here in Singapore. • Most of the Chinese immigrants worked as labourers known as coolies, while others worked as shop keepers and businessmen. The Chinese sacrificed their relationships to come here to work, helping in Singapore’s growth as a port and a nation. • They were the largest immigrant group and therefore had the greatest contribution to Singapore. • There were both the skilled and unskilled workers, but mostly unskilled. • They did many jobs in Singapore and contributed to Singapore’s economy Why Commemorate?

  4. Its about commemorating the hard work and labour of the early Chinese immigrants, remembering their bravery to come to Singaporein search of a better life for themselves and their families. What our monument is about

It is to show that the Chinese came from foreign lands to work in Singapore in search of a better life, to earn money. • They worked and laboured and in return, they are glad that they receive their salary, but in the process, they had contributed to Singapore. • We must remember this particular group of immigrants.
