Middle Kingdom • “We Chinese call our country Zhongguo (Middle Kingdom)…The Chinese for centuries knew no other world than China, for thousands of years, no other highly developed culture than their own…The realm of the Chinese was the center of civilization, the center of the Earth.” • What does this quote say about the Chinese mindset?

  3. Mandate of Heaven • Mandate = • Right to do something (rule) • Heaven = • Something divine, greater than human, superior • Key idea was that the Chinese believed heaven granted the ruler the mandate to rule. • People than owed their complete loyalty and obedience to the ruler.

Mandate of Heaven (cont.) • Linked power & responsibility • In exchange for loyalty, the people expected good government • In the event of poor governance, people had the right to rebel • Nature provided signs that the ruler had lost the mandate • Mandate of heaven explains the dynastic cycle • Rise and fall of ruling families
