Big Ideas • Section 1: The Roman Empire accepted many religions, but it came into conflict with Judaism. • Section 2 : Christianity, based on the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth spread quickly after his death. • Section 3 : Within three centuries after Jesus’s death, Christianity had spread through the empire an become Rome’s official religion.

  3. Religion in the Roman Empire • Adopted many religions from Egyptians, Gauls, and Persians. • Rulers only banned a specific religion if they felt it was a political issue, in this case it was Judaism. • While in Roman rule the Jews rebelled for the right to practice their own rituals and beliefs • In the end the Jews were forced out of their territory and had to move on.

Origins of Christianity • Jesus of Nazareth is the man who many people believed was the Jewish Messiah. • Jesus’s parents are Mary, Joseph, The Holy Spirit and God • Jesus learned to be a carpenter and spread his teachings of Judaism through out the world • Jesus was arrested while spreading his teachings and later was crucified. • Three days after his death Jesus rose from the dead, this is mow known as the Resurrection. • For the next forty days he taught his disciples his own beliefs and soon after was taken to Heaven.

The Early Christian World • Christianity is originally from Judea. • Romans disagreed with the ideas of Christianity and tried to put an end to it. • Teachings were to only be spread/taught to Jews. • In the effort to spread their beliefs many Christians were arrested or killed. • Emperor Constantine was the main person who encouraged Christianity to become the official religion of Rome
