SYVUHS Graduation Requirements • English 4 years (40 credits) • Math 3 years (30 credits) • Science 3 years (30 credits) • Social Studies 3 years (30 credits) • Foreign Language/Fine Art or ROP 1 year (10 credits) • PE 2 years (20 credits) • Electives 90 credits Total250 credits • CAHSEE (California High School Exit Exam)must pass

  5. What to Expect at SYVUHS . . . • More homework in academic classes • Homework is included in grade • Math & English are harder than anticipated • Increased social activities necessitates need for time management

  11. Registration Materials Required • Proof of Residence- ALWAYS must have the following two items printed on the official document or bill by the vendor, etc.: 1. Parent/Guardian’s name -- as the responsible party for the bill, etcetera. 2. Street address of where the parent/guardian and student resides. Acceptable forms are as follows (they must be current) • An Electric bill. • A Land-Line Phone bill only – NO Wirelessservice phone bills • A Water bill. • A trash collection bill. • A “Dish Network”, DirecTV, or a Cable bill. • A Propane delivery bill.. When utilities and rent are provided by an employer, the employer must provide a letter stating the parent/guardian and student live at the residence address shown on the enrollment papers AND the Employer must provide proof that their residence is within the school district in one of the formats listed above.

Registration Materials Required con’t … • Registration Form (Yellow) • Home Language Survey (Green) • Course Request Sheet (Blue) • Student will not be enrolled until all the required registration materials are submitted • If you are unsure of course placement please ask for teacher recommendation (keep in mind that colleges prefer students continue to challenge themselves and take math their senior year)

  13. English Placement Test • Scholastic Reading Inventory – Barbara Landon (Reading Specialist) will be administering the exam at each feeder school • Student Lexile and CST scores will be used for English placement • All students who place into Comp English will also take READ 180 as an elective • Retest Policy – score 1030 to 1039 if CST scores are not Proficient or Advanced

  14. Math Placement • Student must earn a passing grade on end of course exam or placement exam to place into next level • Grades from articulated schools will be placed on official high school transcript for Algebra and Geometry • For non-articulated schools testing will be administered at the high school at the end of May. We will notify the math teachers of the date and times.

  15. Pre-requisites • In order to place into Geometry: 8th grade Algebra grades must be:       C or better all trimesters* * Only for school districts articulated with SYVUHSD.  It is recommended for students with two or three Cs in Algebra 1 in 8thgrade, to repeat Algebra 1 at SYHS.  Students need a strong foundation in Algebra 1 in order to be successful in Geometry and Algebra 2, etc. • In order to take Honors English: • 8th grade English grades must be: B or better all trimesters • In order to take a foreign language: • 8th grade English grades must be:       B or better all trimesters and enrolled in CP Eng1 • In order to place into advanced science (Chemistry): 8th grade Algebra AND Science grades must be:    B or better all trimesters and enrolled in Geometry * Students will need to earn a “B” or better in Chemistry to take Honors Biology in 10th grade

New Courses 2012-2013 Agricultural Earth Science Pre-requisite : None, however, students participating in FFA will be given preference for admittance To meet the challenges of the future, the scientific community has recognized the importance of uniting efforts in understanding and caring for Earth and its systems. This course will explain how scientists have found it necessary to share their research across disciplines and try to comprehend Earth’s complexities, including how it is being affected by human activities. It brings together the agriculture interactions that occur during biological and physical world and provides the learner with a solid understanding of the processes that take place on and around the Earth and the synergies that exist between them. In addition, students enrolled in this course will be encouraged to participate in leadership training activities, public speaking events and become active members in the FFA.  Business Algebra Pre-requisite: None Provides students with an understanding of linear equations and inequalities, systems of equations and inequalities, exponents and polynomials, quadratic functions, and rational equations. Students will use the business principles of revenue, cost, and profit as the context for learning the mathematical content. An integrated instructional approach provides students with a practical understanding of fundamental business and finance issues while providing an engaging context to master the foundational Algebra I concepts.

  17. Santa Ynez Valley Union High School REQUIRED SUBJECT’S Circle one level of each required subject and write its course number on the line to its left. See the Reg Guide for pre-requisites. COURSE NUMBER: ELECTIVE SUBJECT’SChoose two electives in order of preference on line 6 & 7. Then list three more classes IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE! COURSE NUMBER: (Your selections on line 8, line 9, and line 10 are your alternates.) SPECIAL EDUCATION (RSP, LH & SH) REGISTRATION: Special Education students will be registered at individual IEP transition meetings. The undersigned acknowledge with their signatures that ALL COURSES ARE YEAR LONG (Refer to Drop/Add Policy)

  19. REMINDER …… • No elective changes after August 6th • All classes (academic and elective) are year long • Academic level changes within first 6 weeks with parent permission • Teacher change or period change requests will not be granted
