  4. So, what causes it anyway? • Poor self-esteem • Family Problems • Depression • Desire for Perfection • Controlling Parents • Social Isolation • Media Pressure • Social Pressure • If your mom had an eating disorder

  5. The Media Link • We see 400-600 advertisements each day in magazines, newspapers, on billboards and television. • 75% of normal women think they are overweight • 90% of women overestimate their body size • 41% of men are dissatisfied with their weight

  6. Myths…. • Myth #1: You have to be underweight to have an eating disorder. • Myth #2: Only teenage girls and young women are affected by eating disorders. • Myth #3: People with eating disorders are vain. • Myth #4: Eating disorders aren’t really that dangerous.

  7. Anorexia Nervosa • Self-starvation/Intense Weight Loss

  8. Signs of Anorexia • Obsessive fasting/dieting • Irrational fear of fat • Disgust with body size • Excessive Exercise • Withdrawn from family/friends • Weighs themselves repeatedly • Depressed

  9. Effects of Anorexia • a drop in blood pressure, pulse, and breathing rate • hair loss and fingernail breakage • loss of periods • hair — soft hair that grows all over the skin • lightheadedness and inability to concentrate • anemia • swollen joints • brittle bones

  12. Bulimia Nervosa • Involves binge eating followed by self-induced vomiting, other purging excessive fasting or obsessive exercise.

Effects of Bulimia • Constant stomach pain • Damage to a person's stomach and kidneys • Tooth decay (from exposure to stomach acids) • “Chipmunk cheeks," when the salivary glands permanently expand from throwing up so often • Loss of periods • Loss of the mineral potassium (this can contribute to heart problems and even death)
