PREFACE • 10-Year Anniversary Celebration • History, Information and Facts • On the evening of September 18, 1990 a meeting attended by nine area hams interested in forming an amateur radio club was held at the Central Missouri State University (CMSU) Technology Building. • Larry Vandivier WB9YDL • Katie Pautz WAØRVT • John Price WØGHV • Clarke Homoly WØRPC • Mike Crum N4RWV • Randy Coker NØHZS • Floyd Bauer WAØLHZ • Ralph Barnhart NØFMM • Tim Antwiler KBØAAA • Saturday, October 6, area hams met at Lions Lake in Warrensburg. This gathering incorporated a picnic and swap meet. Although not officially a club yet this became the first club activity. • The group met again in November at the Country Kitchen in Warrensburg. This meeting was more a social gathering. • A fourth meeting was held in December at the University Inn located in the Best Western Motel in Warrensburg. The club was formally established and the first officers were appointed. • So began the new Warrensburg Area Amateur Radio Club, Inc.

WAARCI Ham of the Year • The Ham of the Year Award is presented to a club member who has demonstrated exceptional support to the club and has gone above and beyond what is normally expected of a club member. This individual has exemplified themselves by setting a positive example in all areas of the amateur radio hobby. He/She has been a consistent participant in club activities and has taken on numerous leadership roles. Their dedication and commitment to amateur radio are recognized through this elite award selection. Chronology • September 18, 1990 – Nine area “hams” met at the CMSU Technology building to discuss forming a new club. • October 6, 1990 – First Unofficial Club Activity was held - - a Swap-Fest and Picnic at Lions Lake (picnic area), Warrensburg, MO. • December 8, 1990 – Club was formally established and first club officers appointed. • January 5, 1991 - The first scheduled meeting of the new club was rescheduled for January 19, 1991 due to an ice storm. • January 12, 1991 - Club’s first participation in area hamfest activities - members attended the Cameron Hamfest. • January 19, 1991 – First Club meeting. A contest was held to design a club logo. • February 1991 – WAARCI is officially granted ARRL affiliation status and the club becomes a not-for-profit organization. • February 6, 1991 – The first upgrade classes were held at Keith Haye’s house, 612 Foster Lane, Warrensburg. • February 16, 1991 - The Club VE Team assisted with the W5YI test session in Clinton, MO. • May 4, 1991 – The Club Constitution and By-Laws were approved. The Club membership approved the new club logo - - designed by Larry Vandivier. Following the meeting the VE Team assisted with a W5YI test session in Clinton. • May 31, 1991 - Keith Haye attended the first meeting of the Missouri Council of Amateur Radio Clubs in Columbia, MO. • June 22-23, 1991 - First Field Day for WAARCI was held at Lion’s Lake in Warrensburg. • July 6, 1991 - First amendment made to the Club Constitution. The office of Secretary/ Treasurer was divided into separate duties and responsibilities. • July 13, 1991 - First WAARCI ARRL test session held at the CMSU Technology building. • August 9, 1991 - Keith Haye and Les Stewart attended the Ozark Regional Hamfest Banquet. Guest speakers were NASA Astronauts Roy Neal (K6DUE) and Ken Cameron (KB5AWP). • August 22, 1991 - Club participated in the CMSU KMOS TV6 telethon fund drive. • September 1991 - Les Stewart (NØMPW) conducts first audit of club finances in accordance with the Club Constitution.

Chronology • (Continued) • September 7, 1991 - Club’s first participation in the MS-150 Bicycle Ride. • September 21, 1991 - Thirty club members helped with the first clean up of Knob Noster State Park (Clearfolk Lake area) and enjoyed the picnic following the clean-up. • October 1991 - Monday night VHF net is discontinued -- rescheduled for Sunday evenings at 8:30 p.m. • November 16, 1991 - The club’s ARRL VE Team held it’s second ARRL test session. Volunteer Examiners Dave Roberts (NØATH) and Dan Botos (KFØNT) from Clinton assisted with the examination. • December 1991 - The Club agrees to purchase a laminator to generate revenue. Jack Welch (WDØBCM) loaned the Club money to make this purchase. • December 14, 1991 - First Christmas Party is held at the Golden Corral in Warrensburg. • January 4, 1992 - Membership cards are issued to paid up members. • January 1992 - WAARCI participates in Kenwood Kids program at the Warrensburg Middle School. The program was established to get kids interested in amateur radio. • February 1992 - Three vacuum tube finals were donated to the club by Dave Snyder (ND3MH) (father of Jason Snyder [WV3V].) • March 1992 - WAARCI works out a deal with the Park Ranger at Knob Noster State Park. WAARCI will clean area around the lake twice a year in exchange for the use of the park area for annual Field Day. • April 1992 - WAARCI purchases a liability insurance policy. The laminator was purchased. Mr. Bill McGrannahan, KØORB, Vice Director Midwest Division, presented a program on the future of amateur radio after the regular club meeting. • June 1992 - John Mullis (NØGRN) donated a portable 38-foot crank-up tower. • September 5, 1992 - Participated in Amateur Radio Awareness Day at Wal-Mart. • December 1992 - A Repeater Committee was established. Members: Larry Vandivier (WB9YDL), Les Stewart (NØMPW), Bill Martin (KA1TRU), Jack Welch (WDØBCM), and Keith Haye (WEØG). The club agreed to purchase a repeater and controller with funds to be raised. A.Ralph Boxell makes initial $100 donation towards this goal.

Ralph Boxell announced at the Christmas Party that he will donate monies to purchase the new repeater and controller! • December 1992 - Audit was conducted on club assets by Mike Crum (N4RWV) and Denise Haye (NØPVZ). • January 1993 - Meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather. • January 1993 - A. Ralph Boxell made an Honorary Life Member of WAARCI. • January 1993 - Jack Welch (WDØBCM) donated a display board to WAARCI. • January 1993 - A Participation Awards Program was created on a trial basis. Jason Snyder (NV3V) won the only Participation Award presented. • February 1993 - New Repeater and Controller installed. • March 1993 - Dennis Rosas (NØUDR) is appointed first Emergency Coordinator. • June 5, 1993 - First meeting and picnic at the Lake of the Ozarks (Bob Belker’s place). • September 1993 - Dennis Rosas (NØUDR) reassigned to Korea. • September 25, 1993 - HF Special Events Station at Skyhaven Airport to celebrate CMSU Open House. • October 1993 - Participated in Boy Scout Jamboree on the Air and held the Knob Noster State Park clean-up with picnic following. • November 1993 - Purchased and installed a shed at the Repeater site. • December 1993 - Don Thomas (KBØJYF) appointed ARES representative for Johnson County’s Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC). • March 5, 1994 - Nancy Peterson, LEPC Coordinator, gave a presentation at the conclusion of the general membership meeting. • April 1994 - Life memberships were introduced. • May 1994 - Duplexers installed on the system and autopatch activated.

  12. Chronology • (Continued) • August 20, 1994 - First “Fox” hunt. Fox Box built by Stu Skaar (N8OXU) and son Joel (N8ZHA). • September 17, 1994 - Participated in Amateur Radio Awareness Day at Wal-Mart. • October 1994 - A WAARCI Scholarship fund was established with donations from Keith (WEØG) and A. Ralph (NØOHD). • November 16, 1994 - Participated in Boy Scout Jamboree on the Air. • December 10, 1994 - Ray Pautz (WAØKDE) received first “Ham of the Year” Award at the Fourth Annual Christmas Party. • December 17, 1994 - First Special Event Station - KB6JHP. Station was operated from the South Recreation Lake area at Whiteman AFB, MO and celebrated the 1-year anniversary of the arrival of the first B-2 at Whiteman. Phil Meyer (KB6JHP), was Chairman of this event. • January 1995 - Annual Audit completed by Denise Haye (NØPVZ). • March 25, 1995 - WAARCI applies for a club call from the FCC. • April 1995 - The A. Ralph Boxell, NØOHD Amateur Radio Scholarship was established at Central Missouri State University. • April 1995 - Purchased the WAARCI club banner. • April 1995 - Installed a replacement packet radio along with 12 amp power supply. • May 1995 - WAARCI receives club call (KBØRXU). Packet node goes back on the air. • May 16, 1995 - The Raihala family departed for Japan. • May 1995 - WAARCI participated in Sunrace’95. Over 28 solar powered vehicles passed through Warrensburg. • May 21, 1995 - Michael Pate (KGØRS) and family departed for new home in Portland, OR. • July 1995 - Mark Nolan (KJ7LK) reassigned to Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City, OK. • November 18, 1995 - First Warrensburg Hamfest. • January 1996 - Roll Call was eliminated from the Sunday evening ARES nets. Net control duties were standardized.

  13. Chronology • (Continued) • January 1996 - Mike (NØVNM) and Dee (NØZVT) Brown reassigned to Shaw AFB, SC. • March 1996 - Access to phone line lost. WAARCI has new phone line. • April 1996 - Meetings are moved to the 2nd Saturday of the month so as not to interfere with other activities (namely Hamfests.) • May 16, 1996 - WAARCI takes on maintenance and upkeep of Lea Cemetery. Club received $400 for first year. • July 13, 1996 - First “Junk in the Trunk” swap meet after General Membership meeting. • September 1996 - Bill (KA1TRU) and Pauline Martin transferred to Alaska. • January 1997 - WAARCI receives new vanity call: WØAU. This call had been issued to Paul Hampton who was a member of the 1980’s club in Warrensburg. • January 1997 - WAARCI Web page established by Dave Woller (KBØULQ): www.iland/~wollerd/waarci.htm • March 1997 - Board meetings set to meet the Sunday prior to the regular club meeting at CMSU. Time set for 12:30 with brunch available at 11:00 a.m. • Mid-May 1997 - Andy Kmak (KB7FS) departed for training in California, then will move to his new home in Florida. • June 1997 - Annual audit completed by Denise Haye, NØPVZ. • September 1997 - QSL card contest held. • May 1998 - Dave Woller resigns as Vice President. Monte Montemarano (KBØUVU) steps in to become “interim” Vice President. • June 1998 - Coax is purchased and installed on the lower 100 feet of the tower. • November 1998 - Jim & Kathy Callon departed for new home in Michigan. • December 1998 - WAARCI agrees to cover all costs of the autopatch. Wallet-size cards with instructions on how to access the autopatch were given to all club members. • December 1998 - Rick Ebbesen (KBØVZP) volunteers to be Net Control Manager.

Chronology • (Continued) • January 1999 - WAARCI approved the purchase of a new controller for 2 meter and 440 repeaters. • February 1999 - Received approval from the Missouri Repeater Council to use the 443.200 frequency. Club has 6 months to activate this frequency. • March 1999 - Participated in the Emergency Services Fair held at Wal-Mart. • April 1999 - New controller and Digital Voice Recorder is purchased and received; needs to be programmed and installed. Amplifier sent back to manufacturer for repairs. • May 1999 - Mysterious interference in Kansas City is tracked down by Keith, Rick, and Ray. Problem resolved! • July 1999 - Amplifier is repaired and back on-line. • August 17, 1999 - The 440 repeater was activated. • September 1999 - Club logo was revised to show WØAU instead of the 146.88 frequency. • September 18, 1999 - Participated in Amateur Radio Awareness Day at Wal-Mart. • November 1999 - A new web page was developed by Ryan Welch (www.callto/waarci) • January 2000 - New controller given to Bryon Jeffers (NØYLH) who will complete programming, install tone board, and crystals, and fine tune. WAARCI to purchase cans and radio for the 440 repeater. • February 2000 - Dwight Sisk donated HP DC Power Supply to club. A. Ralph Boxell donated a set of ARRL General Class Upgrade cassettes and videos to the club. • March 11, 2000 - An “informal” club meeting was held at the Shriners Hamfest in Kansas City. • March 2000 - Gary Neighbors (KCØFAL) completed the annual audit on WAARCI assets. • March 2000 - A.Ralph Boxell donated portable rechargeable power supply. • May 2000 - A Special Events Station and display were set up at the Warrensburg theater to celebrate opening night of the movie “Frequency.”
