  3. George Barna-USA Today 09/13/11 “We are a designer society. We want everything customized to our personal needs-our clothing, our food, our education, and now it’s our religion.” “People say, ‘I believe in God. I believe the Bible is a good book. And then I believe whatever I want.’”

  7. Prayer is Essential How’s your prayer life? What has been helpful? What gets in the way? Who is praying for you? How central is prayer in the community in which you serve?

  8. Leadership is Needed Adaptive vs. Technical Challenges Ron Heifitz: • Technical Challenges- Are problems we know how to solve • Adaptive Challenges- Require learning and changing people’s hearts and minds. Most social problems are adaptive challenges.

  9. Adaptive Leadership The adaptive context is a situation that demands a response outside your current toolkit or repertoire; it consists of a gap between aspirations and operational capacity that cannot be closed by the expertise and procedures currently in place.

  10. AdaPtive leadership In an adaptive challenge leaders don’t know what they are doing because it’s a frontier where everyone is in over their heads. The adaptive leader unleashes the imaginative/creative juices, invites experimentation, anticipates making mistakes and things to fail, but pushes for lessons learned through the experiments

  12. What is EQ? Daniel Goleman: “the capacity for recognizing our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in ourselves and our relationships.”

  13. Compentencies Self-awareness: knowing what we are feeling in the moment and using those preferences to guide our decision making, having a realistic assessment of our own abilities and a well-grounded sense of self-confidence

  14. Self-regulation: Handling our emotions so that they facilitate rather than interfere with the task at hand; being conscientious; recovering well from emotional distress.

  15. Motivation: Using our deepest preferences to move and guide us toward our goals, to help us take initiative and strive to improve, and to persevere in the face of setbacks and frustrations.

  16. Empathy: Sensing what people are feeling, being able to take their perspective, and cultivating rapport and attunement with a broad diversity of people.

  17. Social Skills: Handling emotions in relationships well and accurately reading social situations and networks; interacting smoothly; using these skills to persuade and lead, negotiate and settle disputes, for cooperation and teamwork.

  18. Navigating the Landscape Requires Adaptive Leaders, Emotionally Intelligent Leaders and Servant Leaders

  19. Servant Leaders Greenleaf: “The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived?"
