  1. What is the Effect of Emotional Intelligence? Extended Project Qualification by Alex Dunn

  2. What is Emotional Intelligence (EQ)? • Measured as EQ • Four Dimensions (Petrides: 2001): Emotionality Self-control Sociability Well-being • Ability to perceive, assessand manage emotions of self and others

  3. Number of EQ related papers published by year (Stough et al: 2009)

  4. The number of EQ related papers archived in SCOPUS (Stough et al:2009)

  5. Aim: To determine the effect of Emotional Intelligence on sporting performance

  6. Research hypotheses: • There is a difference in EQ between sporting performers of different standards • There is a link between Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and success in sport (Rugby Football Union)

  7. Experiment 1 • Experimental Hypothesis: Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is higher in elite athletes than in non-elite athletes (RFU players) • Null Hypothesis: Any difference in Emotional Intelligence between elite and non-elite athletes is not significant and is due to chance

  8. Results: Graph to show the difference in EQ between elite and non-elite athletes EQ score out of 7

  9. Experiment 2 • Experimental Hypothesis: There is a positive correlation between Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and skill success rate in non-elite athletes (RFU players) • Null hypothesis: Any correlation between Emotional Intelligence and skill success rate in non-elite athletes is not significant and is due to chance

  10. Results:

  11. Implications & Conclusions • There is a positive correlation between EQ and performance in sport • Increasing EQ would have a positive effect on performance • EQ may be the difference in quality of performance between elite and non elite performers • Emotional Intelligence may be utilised by performers to maximise their sporting success

  12. Reliability & Validity Issues • Self-report questionnaire; Self-efficacy • Social Desirability Bias • Confounding Variables

  13. Main Challenges and How I overcame them: • Finding a test for Emotional Intelligence • Obtaining the tests • Willingness of Participants • Little research into EI in sport

  14. My Resources • Books • Internet • Journals • Articles • Dr. K. V. Petrides via email

  15. What did I learn? • Emotional Intelligence is measured as a quotient (EQ) • There are various theories of EI. E.g. Trait Theory • EI includes relation to others – socialisation • Links between EI; neuroscience; neurolinguistic programming; mindfulness; etc.

  16. Was I pleased with my finished result?

  17. If I was to do this again, what would I do differently? • Implement improvements on the previous slide • Look more deeply into the effects of social interaction during performance
