  1. ANTHRO 174 WDr. Douglas White7 Nov. 2006 Rough Draft Presentation by: CHRISTINA ZDENEK

  2. Christina Zdenek’s 5 Step process to writing this paper Step 1: Find what you’re interested in and form a hypothesis Step 2: Do crosstabs, checking strength of correlations, and examine alternatives Step 3: Make Visual Representations of Data Step 4: Do plenty of research, using reliable sources Step 5: Bring it all together in a clear, well organized, and well written 15 pg. paper Christina Zdenek

  3. Step 1 Hypothesis • General: the better a culture’s nutrition, the better immune function its people will have  Resulting in less pathogen stress • Specific: a higher consumption of fish as a local food supply in a society will result in less pathogen stress  conversely, a higher consumption of animal husbandry will result in more pathogen stress Christina Zdenek

  4. Step 2 Fishing-Contribution to Food Supply (v. 7) vs.Malaria (v. 1255) Animal Husbandry-Contribution to Food Supply (v. 5) vs. Malaria (v. 1255) Christina Zdenek

  5. Step 3 Christina Zdenek

  6. MALARIA v.1255 FILARIAE v.1257 LEISHMANIASv.1253 TRYPANOSOMES v.1254 Step 3 Christina Zdenek

  7. Step 4 Research • So far, research has led to an understanding of disease • distribution that is mainly affected by region (distribution • of vectors), and secondly affected by diet and nutrition. • There is a lot information about how nutrition affects immune function among people in general (i.e. how fish oils and omega-3 fatty acids promote good immunity in the body), but NOT how different society’s nutritional status relates to their pathogen stress. • Why are these variables correlated in such a way? • Key websites for my topic: • CDC (a reliable dot-gov site) • WHO (a reputable world org.) Ex. “Most forms of leishmaniasis are originally infections of small mammals (‘reservoir hosts’), which play a major role in the epidemiology of the disease” - TDR Christina Zdenek
