  1. SSD 101 Instructor Training: Academic Advising Basics Academic Advising Center Chambers Hall 109 732.906.2596 advising@middlesexcc.edu

  2. Why do students register for SSD 101? • Students who place into more than one developmental course (not including MAT 014) are required to take Student Success 101. • SSD 101 is NOT a developmental course.

  3. Developmental Courses • Are identified by course numbers that begin with a zero (e.g. ENG 010, MAT 013, RDG 011) • Must be taken in sequence and included in the student’s schedule until completed with a grade of “C” or better • CANNOT be used to satisfy degree requirements

  4. Developmental Courses (continued) • Some students may be excused from the second level of developmental Reading (RDG 011) or English (ENG 010). • Must be nominated by instructor • Based on final grade in course and score on exit exam • Students in developmental courses cannot take more than 15 credits without filing an appeal in the Advising Center.

  5. MAT 014 or Credit-Bearing Math? • If the student is enrolled in a degree program that requires MAT 116 or higher, MAT 014 (Algebra II) is required. • Math Requirements by Major • Students enrolled in degree programs that do not require MAT 014 (e.g. Liberal Arts, Criminal Justice) should consider transferability of math courses.

  6. More Math Considerations • MAT 010, 013, 014, 129 and 131 have two semester variations (e.g. MAT 010A and MAT 010B). Students who are unsuccessful in their first attempt at the full version should be strongly encouraged to consider the two semester option. • Students receiving a “B-” or “C+” or “C” in MAT 014 must take the two semester variation (MAT 129A/MAT 129B) of MAT 129 (Precalculus).

  7. Combination Math Classes

  8. BIO 010 and CHM 010 • All Health Technology applicants must take BIO 010 and CHM 010 or have the equivalent from high school. • Students who had a lab Biology class in high school with a grade of “C” or better are exempt from BIO 010. • Students who had a lab Chemistry class in high school with a grade of “C” or better are exempt from CHM 010.

  9. BIO 010, CHM 010, and CHM 020 • All science majors (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Bio Pre-professional) without the appropriate high school science background must take BIO 010 and should register for CHM 020 in lieu of CHM 010. • MAT 013 is a corequisite of BI0 010. • MAT 013 is a prerequisite of CHM 010. • MAT 014 is a prerequisite of CHM 020.

  10. Two Ways to Determine Degree Requirements Curriculum Checksheet Program Evaluation • Lists all course requirements for the major/degree program • Found online in the College Catalog: Curriculum Checksheets or in the Academic Advising Center • Accessed through WebAdvisor • Reflects: • Courses the student has completed • Courses in which the student is currently enrolled • Courses still needed

  11. General Education Electives • 4 types • GE Social Science (GE SS) • GE Humanities (GE HUM) • GE DIV (GE Diversity) • GE Math, Science, Technology (GE MST) • Can be found online: General Education Electives • Students now have the option to search for classes with the GE designation in the Search for Classes section of CampusCruiser.

  12. Modern Language • All Liberal Arts majors must take 2 semesters of a modern language (in sequence). • If the student took the language in high school, he/she must take a diagnostic test in the Testing Center.

  13. CSC 105 and CSC 106 • CSC 105 may not transfer. If unsure, students should consult with a Transfer Counselor. • CSC 106 has a prerequisite of MAT 014 and the student must indicate a working knowledge of Microsoft Office. • If CSC 105 is not completed, an advisor’s signature is required for in-person registration.

  14. Overview of Liberal Arts • ENG 121 and ENG 122 (“C” or better) • HIS 121 and HIS 122 • Two semesters of a modern language • SPE 121 • HED or PED • Four courses in the student’s choice of Liberal Arts option. • Divisional Elective • One GE Humanities elective • Two GE Social Sciences electives • One GE Diversity • One GE Math, one GE Science, and one of either. • Liberal Arts Business—must have two GE Math classes and one GE Science.

  15. Overview of Criminal Justice • ENG 121and ENG 122 (“C” or better) • CJU 123 and CJU 124 • PSY 123, SOC 121, POS 201 and POS 220 are required social sciences • CSC 105 • CJ students must complete one GE Math and one GE four-credit science.

  16. Unsure of BUS.AS or Liberal Arts Business? What’s in Common? • MAT 014Mat 123 or MAT 129A or MAT 129 (MAT 129 is mandatory for LABUS) • ACC 101 and ACC 102 • ECO 201 and ECO 202 • SPE 121 • CSC 106 • BUS 101, BUS 201, MKT 201, and MGT 210 are only for BUS.AS majors. • Liberal Arts Business is designed for students to transfer to Rutgers—New Brunswick

  17. Overview of Allied Health Pre-Professional and Health Technologies • Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Radiography, Medical Laboratory Technology, Respiratory Care • Must have all developmental Reading, English, and Math courses complete by the close of winter session. • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher for DHY, RAD, NUR and RESP; 2.0 for Medical Lab Technology • TEAS exam needed for all but Med Lab

  18. Overview of Allied Health Pre-Professional and Health Technologies (continued) • Must have at least a “C” in laboratory Biology and Chemistry. • Nursing applicants must have at least a “B” in those two areas. • Applications are accepted from June 30th to January 30th. • Review of Application Procedures

  19. Portable Colleague • The Office of the Registrar has developed a document that allows the advisor to see certain parts of Colleague screens to use at the SSD Registration sessions. • This document will show placement test/SAT results, high school lab grades, and previous/current MCC courses. • This will assist in advising for the health technologies and the information will be invaluable for those students who arrive unprepared.

  20. Summer Session Classes • There are four week, seven week, and fourteen week varieties. • Schedule will be posted on 2/22 with registration beginning 2/25. • Students looking to take the second part of a two-part math in the summer should understand that they are quickening the pace of the course. • Students should consult with a Transfer Counselor about the ability of these courses to transfer.

  21. Full-Time vs. Part-Time • Part-time = 11 credits or fewer • Full-time = 12 credits or more • Six primary reasons for a student to be full-time • Covered by his/her parents’ health insurance • NJ Stars Student • Student Athlete • International Student • Receiving Certain Types of Financial Aid • Veteran of the Armed Forces

  22. Faculty Advisors • By AFT contract, all full-time students are assigned faculty advisors. • Names of advisors are available through WebAdvisor in CampusCruiser. • Full-time students are strongly encouraged to meet with their assigned faculty advisors. • Faculty office hours and locations can be found on the Advising Center website: Faculty Office Hours

  23. Full-time students are assigned Faculty Advisors from their academic division.

  24. Academic Status • Students on Academic Probation can take no more than 4 courses/14 credits (whichever is fewer). • Students on Academic Restriction can take no more than 2 classes/8 credits (whichever is fewer). Information about Academic Status

  25. Points of Emphasis • There must be personal involvement with the students—please don’t sit in the back of the Amphitheater and observe the session. • It is fully expected that you assist our students with choosing and registering for their Summer 2013 and/or Fall 2013 classes. • Please take attendance at the end of the registration sessions so that absent students will have their holds reinstated.

  26. What do students need to bring? • Current schedule • Placement Test Scores • Program Evaluation from their WebAdvisor Account • Curriculum Checksheet • Students need to be sure that both their immunization records and final high school transcripts have been received by the college. If either one of these documents has not been received, their registration will be blocked.

  27. Upcoming Important Dates • Week of February 25th—students on the Edison campus will come to BH 100 for registration preparation. • Week of March 18th– students on the Edison campus will come to BH 100 for their web registration for Summer and/or Fall 2013. • Students in the Urban Centers will stay in New Brunswick and Perth Amboy.
