  5. French Immersion Immersion is designed for students whose first language is not French. The objective is a full mastery of the English language, functional fluency in French, and an understanding and appreciation of French culture.We have two immersion programs at Central, the Early French Immersion, Immersion précoce, beginning in kindergarten and Late French Immersion, Immersion tardive, beginning in grade six.

  6. What Is Late French Immersion? • Late French Immersion gives English speaking children the opportunity to learn French language in an immersion setting. • At Central Middle School, students take their core subjects, i.e. Language Arts, Social Studies, Sciences, and Math in French. Their options and Physical Education are taught in English. • After three years in this specialized program the students will be successfully integrated with the students from Early Immersion at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School.

  7. The Late French Immersion program at Central is an alternative program open to all students. The following are a list of helpful skills potential students may exhibit: • has an interest in French • is looking for a challenge • has strong basic skills in the first language • has good work habits • has good listening skills • is an independent learner • is able to deal with frustration • has a support system to provide encouragement • has a strong sense of self and is able to laugh at mistakes • is motivated to learn and be successful

What the year will look like • September: Nervous excitement; basic “survival” vocabulary • October- December: Begin grade 6 curriculum; develop confidence in following directions in French • January- March: Students begin to express themselves primarily in French • April-June: Complete grade 6 curriculum objectives and incorporate more written French
