  1. Strengthening Community Engagement – PM&E PM&E Workshop, Khulna, Feb 16 - 20

  2. Community Engagement in AAS The biggest difference between R4D and RinD is how embedded the research is in the development process. • Embedded means that it is not separate, that it is fully integrated • Embedded means that it works to support development • Embedded means that we have the potential to bring about transformative change Our BIG research question in AAS is to understand HOW change happens and how we contribute to development outcomes and impact

  3. CLCP Steps

  4. We facilitate engagement through PAR http://www.rippleethiopia.org/page/action-research

  5. AAS - PAR Principles 1. The process is owned by participants themselves, who define their real-life problems to be addressed through PAR. 2. PAR recognizes multiple voices and power relations and, to ensure equity, requires facilitation to be mindful of who is participating and how they are participating. 3. PAR emphasizes jointly shared responsibilities for collection of data and its analysis to support improved understanding and improved action. 4. Results of the process are fed back to the participants for ongoing learning that is potentially transformative.

  6. From AAS Program Brief Apgar & Douthwaite (2013) PAR on specific identified areas PAR on vegetable seeds Other forms of inquiry support the change process PAR PAR on canal governance Community change process

  7. Community engagement VISSIONING, SELF ASESSMENT, ISSUE PRIORITIZING, ETC. PAR EVALUATION/ LEARNING ACTION PLAN PM&E MONITORING

  8. Link to Program M&E Community owned PM&E system is their process of appreciating and understanding change – empowerment! We as the program are interested in the change process and how we CONTRIBUTED to it. The outcomes that communities identify through their own measurement of change and our PAR documentation – help the program understand contribution in the communities we work with/in.

  9. Community Outcomes – Bangladesh trial

  10. Priority for this year • Complete the CLCP cycle through PAR in all villages • Facilitate reflection on progress towards achieving village dreams • Identify the changes experienced • Work with the facilitation teams to build capacity for this ongoing engagement and reflection process
