  3. P&C • Operates the School Canteen, Uniform Shop, Second Hand Book Shop. • We have a policy of not running fundraising activities to fund the P&C. We only ask parents and carers to help the P&C raise the needed funds in two ways: • Voluntary P&C Contributions - $35 per student • Tax-Deductible donation to the P&C Building Fund – used to upgrade school facilities for the benefit of all students. • Provides a forum for all parents to communicate directly with the School and to enable each family to make a positive contribution to the educational opportunities available to all students. A place to have your voice heard.

P&C • In 2018 P&C Contributions paid for: • Year 7-12 Drug Awareness Talks • Books for Home Economics • Student Council and House Captains Leadership Camp • “Survival” Counselling for all Leavers • In 2018 P&C Building Funds Contributions paid for: • Updated Media Room Furnishings such as a Green Screen for filming • Two lathes for D&T • UV Meter (waiting delivery from Cancer Council) • Shade Sail and Seating from Home Economics Cafe

  5. P&C – How can you help? • Attend P&C Meetings twice a term and/or • Help at the Canteen between 10:15 am – 1:45 pm. Please e-mail the P&C on lshspandc@gmail.com or drop in the Canteen and speak to Debbie Bowie, the Canteen Manager. • Wednesday 20 February 2019 is the P&C AGM at which all office bearer positions become available and are open for nomination. Meetings are held twice a Term at 7.30 pm in the Staff Room.

UNIFORM • Wearing the school uniform is compulsory both in school and on out-of-school excursions. • The Physical Education uniform is also compulsory – this is the blue and red polo shirt and shorts. • Students are not permitted to wear the Physical Education uniform during the school day. You will be asked to change or collect a dress pass. • Students not wearing the uniform without a parent explanation will be required to attend a detention.

LATENESS TO SCHOOL • Students are required to be in class at 8.30am. • Students who are late to school are required to sign in at the KIOSK at Student Services and print a late pass before going to class. • If students arrive late without reporting to Student Services a text message will be sent home to advise parents of the absence. • Students who are late without a note or phone call from a care giver will be required to complete detention during lunch.

SCHOOL DIARY AND HOMEWORK • All students require a diary – timetable. • Students are required to use this to record homework and for the organisation of equipment for classes. • Organisation is essential for success. • Library will be open every Monday after school 3-4pm with the Teacher Librarian who will run sessions on organisation, homework and study skills. Days to be confirmed.

ATTENDANCE • School Priority – Target is 93% or better. • Parents are required to account for student absence (email, text message or note). • Text messages are sent in the morning if we have not heard from you. • Unresolved or U’s will be sent home via your child’s House Group teacher as a letter (fortnightly). • Remember holidays during the term are recorded as a “K” Vacation – unauthorised.

  14. ATTENDANCE If your child is absent: • Bring a note to their House Group teacher the next day. • Students should check with their class teachers what they missed. Check with a friend in their class. • Check Connect at home for any work or messages. • Work will not be provided for holiday’s during school term.

MOBILE PHONES • During the school day mobile phones should be switched off and out of sight. • It is not appropriate for year 7 students to use their phone as a diary. • Inappropriate use of electronic devices will result in the device being confiscated by staff and given to the HOLA, Student Services Manager and finally Deputy Principal for collection at the end of the school day. • At this stage a loss of the privilege will occur – no phone at school for a period of time.

  17. MOBILE PHONES • Students should never use their phone/device to take photos or videos of themselves or other students. This includes travelling to and from school. • The Director General has instructed schools on the consequences for this type of behaviour. • Leeming SHS can accept no responsibility for theft, loss, damage or health effects (potential or actual) resulting from mobile phone.

LEEMING SHS SMARTRIDER/LIBRARY CARD • All students will be issued a combined SmartRider/Library card. • Students are required to present this card when borrowing from the Library. • SmartRider card can be topped up with credit and used on Perth public transport. • If your child loses their card, they can come to the Library to see if it has been handed in – or to purchase a new card ($5).

  20. RESILIENCY • Students will work through a program as part of their Health lessons. • Focus upon their approach to situations and how to go through problem solving and making smart choices. • Each student will receive a booklet from the school.

HOW TO HELP • Ask to see you child’s file or notebook regularly. • Check the diary and Connectpages. • Help you child with organisation. • Sit down with your child to develop a weekly schedule of activities. TIP: Add in all known compulsory activities/appointments first e.g. football training, dance lesson. Then add in study and homework around those. • Homework Plan – map the week.

COMMUNICATION WITH THE SCHOOL If there is an issue or concern with your son/daughter, please use the following procedure: • Contact your son/daughter’s Classroom Teacher if you have any concerns about their educational progress. • Contact the Year Coordinator as your first port of call (for information, concerns, queries, day to day matters or other problems). • Contact the Student Services Manager of Year 7-9 (Mrs. Julie-Ann Ford) or the Deputy of Year 7 students (Ms Judy Semple) in the event of a serious problem or educational concern.

What do I do? • Listen to your child’s concerns and advise • Help with projects that are health related • Go to classes to give a presentation • Assist your child if they are unwell, injured, anxious or sad • Promote health e.g. hats, sunscreen, exercise, breakfast, sleep etc • Contact parents/guardians if needed • Refer to outside agencies • Eye tests

  30. Emergency situations requiring an ambulance • If required, the school will call an ambulance in an emergency. The school health service does not provide emergency care. • Ambulance only Cover can be accessed through Private health insurance E.g. HBF, Medicare Private, Bupaetc and costs approx $120 for family cover for the year. • I strongly encourage families to have ambulance cover if you have not got private health insurance

  33. How to cope with change • Advised to stay in contact with "old" school friends and make new friends. Include new people into their friendship group. • Encouraged to get involved in school activities • Look at the positives of being at high school • Encouraged to “Be yourself”.

  34. CONNECT – WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? It is a Department of Education communication tool. It works on 3 levels: • Teachers • Students • Parents To ensure communication and feedback can be timely, ongoing and measured.

CONNECT – WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT? • All students have a Connect account e.g. John.Citizen@student.education.wa.edu.au • Passwords are the same as their school password. • Students and Parents can access Connect 24/7 to access subject specific course content. It is a major conduit for communication between teachers and parents, we therefore recommend checking it regularly. Connect communications arrive in your Inbox as an e-mail with a link.

DIGITAL LITERACY • One hour per week all year. • Topics to be covered this term – Network connection; Connect & Dept. emails; Creating & saving a Word doc to subject folder; Library database; Worldbook online; Setting up BYOD; Cyber Safety; Creating a positive Digital Footprint. • Cyber Safety presentation by Paul Litherland in Week 2, Term 2. • Comment included in the Semester 2 report.

  43. Implementation of BYOD 2019 • Students will not need their device until the final 2-3 weeks of term when they will have their devices set up on the school’s network. They will be notified when to bring their device. • The aim is for all Year 7 students to be on the school network ready for the beginning of Term 2.

WHAT CAN I DO? • Lots of activities are available to students • Listen to the notices and read Connect • PE offers a Year 7 Lightning Carnival in Term 3 – sports include: Boys AFL, Basketball, Soccer and Girls Netball, Soccer, Basketballand the opportunity to be involved in Interschool sports. • The Library organises many activities during lunch time and after school.
