DEC: Process • Charge: Provide specific recommendations for supporting and strengthening teaching and ensuring Oregon is a great place to teach. • Process: • DEC members selected promising topics • Education First provided research • Four meetings between May and August • Final recommendations represent consensus • Recommendation Criteria: • Student-centered, teacher-led • Visionary, achievable and compelling • Research-based • Scalable • Resource consideration

  4. DEC: Additional Considerations • Stable and adequate funding is essential. • Planning and preparation time should be prioritized. • Oregon does not need more unfunded mandates.

  5. Focus on All Phases of Teacher Careers

  6. Recommendation #1: Emphasize classroom experience and effective mentors in teacher preparation.

  7. Recommendation #2: Provide meaningful, ongoing evaluations of teachers that contribute to improved teaching practices and increased student achievement.

  8. Recommendation #3: Ensure personalized professional learning opportunities tailored to each teacher’s needs and the students they teach.

  9. Recommendation #4: Establish new leadership opportunities and career pathways for the most effective teachers.

  10. Recommendation #5: Ensure Oregon’s teachers can address the needs of diverse students.
