  1. Development and Challenges of Spatial Data Archiving in China Dr. Liu Chuang Chair of Spatial Data Committee of Chinese Association of Geographical Information Systems (CAGIS) Professor of Chinese Academy of Sciences 8 March 2005, CONAE(CORDOBA), Argentina

  2. Development and Challenges of Spatial Data Archiving in China • China Spatial Data Archiving History • The Digital Spatial Data Archiving in China • Challenges and Opportunities

  3. China Spatial Data Archiving History China is the country of good at archiving and has a long history in recording the geography of China

  4. Thousand Years Ago The book on Zhouli (two thousands years ago), the book of Mr.Xu Xiaoke’s Records on Geography of China (thousand years ago) are the earliest geographical records in the world about China

  5. Hundred Years Ago A Series of Detail Records Related to the Climate (in descriptions), Earthquakes, Disasters, Agriculture, Labors (Population) in Qing Dynasty Had Been Recorded, the Quality of the Records (the truth) were Controlled by the Great Qing Law

  6. From 1919 to 1949 A series of maps and atlases of China had been published, in which the 1:4M China county boundary maps together with the data and information of population (M and F), schools, churches, hospitals in each of the counties were published, these are the first records in China in the detail of in county level and in 1:4M scale covering most areas of China and Mongolia.

  7. From 1949 to 1970’ Hundreds of Statistic Year Books had been published each year, and archived in National Library, National Statistics Bureau Library and Peking University Library. Thousands of Maps and Atlases had been published and archived in Chinese Academy of Surveying and Mapping (CASM) and Institute of Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

  8. From 1980’ to 2003 China had been undertaking the economic reform and the data media revolution from paper based into digital data at the same time period. The Challenges made China no idea how to deal with, especially in policy making and data management: Is the marketing way could be the China’s scientific data way?

  9. NFII in 2003 National Facilities and Information Infrastructure for Science and Technology of China (NFII) Program formally launched in 2003. Scientific Data Sharing is one of the important tasks of the program, including data sharing policy reform, data archiving reform …..

  10. The Digital Spatial Data Archiving in China Eight major centers from Chinese Academy of Sciences, China Metrology Bureau, National Sea and Ocean Management Bureau of China, National Bureau of Surveying and Mapping of China, China Center of Resources Satellite Data and Application, which archives about half of the digital spatial data created or collected from China, total archived data is about 280TB (2004)

  11. Spatial Data Archiving in Chinese Academy of Sciences • China Remote Sensing Grand Station • Institute of Spatial Science and Technology • Institute of Geography and Natural Resources • Institute of Remote Sensing Application
