  8. What’s a “Master” Image? • And why should I have one? • Reasons not to have = 0 • Reasons to have = anything but 0

  9. Master or Ref Image • It is much faster • Minutes instead of hours • Easier to use • Don’t need to know how to install the OS • Perfect with the Self-service portal • Developers and testers need to create machines • Fast and easy without asking YOU (the Admin) • In fact, you must have an image to do this

  10. Master or Ref Image • Should be repeatable and automatic • Step-by-step • Install the OS • Add system components • Add service packs, hot fixes, agents • Add VM additions • Blank password!

  11. Creating a Master Image • Solution 1 • Install it manually and hope to get it the same way as the last time • Solution 2 • Use unattended files to create the ref images • Solution 3 • Let the existing deployment solution that you have in place create the images for you

  12. Watch Out for: • Windows Server 2003 R2 • Needs two CDs and some “work” to be automatic • Windows Server 2003 R2 -64 • No support for legacy Nic, PXE boot? • Single/Multi HAL? • Does it matter on a ref image? • Agents? • OpsMgr, DPM, CCM, 3:party • Antivirus? • Antimalware? • Thick or Thin? • PXE or Media?
