  1. REtrofittingPUBLic spaces in Intelligent MEDiterranean CitiesThe REPUBLIC-MED projectThe role of building and urban physics analyses in energy and environmental policy making Presentation in the InSMARTkick-off

  2. InSMART kick-off Project motivation Disregarding energy behaviour • Design for compliance – National BES tools The ground floor and the first floor is stone (rubble) wall, while the second floor is a brick wall. The ground floor and the first floor include some coated surfaces surrounding the openings. The openings frames are synthetic double glazing with spacing 12mm, while the ratio of frame/glazing is 20%/80%. Prediction inaccuracies, especially during summer for cooling purposes.

  3. InSMART kick-off Project motivation • Design for compliance – National BES tools • Disregarding UHI effects *J. Bouyer et al., Microclimatic coupling as a solution to improve building energy simulation in an urban context, Energy and Buildings 43 (2011) 1549-1559.

  4. Urban physics assessment failures BEFORE AFTER InSMART kick-off Project motivation • Traditional open-space architectural design Intense heat island after the bioclimatic retrofit

  5. InSMART kick-off Recent directives • 31/2010/EC • New public buildings • NZEB by 2018 and later for New public financed buildings. • 27/2012/EC • Existing public buildings • Acceleration of public-buildings renovation: By 2014 onwards 3% of the total usable surface area of buildings owned or occupied by the central government should be renovated each year towards the accomplishment of minimum energy performance requirements set in each MS.

  6. InSMART kick-off Directives implementation – Study phase Design freedom Better than compliance Design for reliable predictions Design for compliance • Improvement of BEP prediction accuracy => Reliable RES/EE investments in new and existing buildings (retrofit) • HOW?? • Recommendations*: • Account for occupants’ behaviour (questionnaires, smart meters, stochastic modelling) • Dynamic simulations (max: Hourly time steps) • Extension of boundaries to account for energy grid and microclimate impact • Optimization • Etc. *Evaluating and Modelling Near-Zero Energy Buildings; Are we ready for 2018?, JRC Technical Reports, Expert meeting 30-31 Jan 2012, Glaskow.

  7. InSMART kick-off Design for compliance Design for reliable predictions Methods that respond to new requirements for directives implementation • Buildings • Indoor-outdoor interactions • Energy behaviour • Retrofit technologies • Open spaces • UHI assessment • New insights on urban environmental planning Optimization Pilot applications • Enrich design for compliance • Accounting for external microclimate effects • Accounting for behaviour • Optimization=> Possibilities in cost-optimal minimum requirements • Train the stakeholders Plans to introduce approach to policy makers Training seminars

  8. InSMART kick-off Project goals • Acknowledgement of today’s study methods drawbacks • Suggestion of holistic methods to enrich design methods for buildings and open spaces retrofit • Innovation transferring from scientific literature to enrich Design for Compliance • - Guidance to policy makers by providing guidelines to plan retrofit projects & relevant investments • Influence relevant stakeholders (engineers and architects)

  9. InSMART kick-off Buildings COUPLING Building energy performance (nodal model) Urban microclimate (field model) Energy and cost indicators Optimal energy retrofit investments Realistic systems’ operation schedules Influencing factors analysis Optimization scheme and data manipulation

  10. InSMART kick-off Open spaces COUPLING Urban physical models and anthropogenic heat and pollution sources Urban microclimate (field model) Comfort, air quality and cost indicators Optimal planning & retrofit investments Influencing factors analysis Optimization scheme and data manipulation

  11. InSMART kick-off Main objectives • Innovative methods existing in scientific literature responding to the requirements of the previous flow charts. • Suggestion of coupling approaches towards the development of integrated and holistic methodologies for buildings and open spaces retrofit. • Experimentation in 5 pilot sites in Greece, France, Italy, Spain and Croatia. • End users participation at project implementation level (e.g. questionnaires), Skills’ elevation through training seminars and awareness raising through national and transnational events. • Identification of DC/DRP bridging potential

  12. InSMART kick-off Project rationale

  13. InSMART kick-off Partnership

  14. InSMART kick-off First results presented in… • Positioning Workshop New European Directive on nearly zero-energy buildings Are we ready for 2018? • http://www.republic-med.eu/index.php/news-events/event-material-pb • Open Day Meeting Building and Open Spaces Energy Retrofit: Spanish Policies and Financing Schemes • http://www.republic-med.eu/index.php/news-events/event-material-pb/17-public-events/39-open-day-meeting-building-and-open-spaces-energy-retrofit-spanish-policies-and-financing-schemes • First Smart-cities group meeting in Nice-France • http://www.republic-med.eu/index.php/news-events/event-material-pb/17-public-events/40-first-smart-cities-group-meeting • NOVABUILD 2013-Spain • http://www.republic-med.eu/index.php/news-events/event-material-pb/17-public-events/42-novabuild
