What is Social Return on Investment (SROI)? • An analytical tool which assigns a monetary value to social, environmental and economic costs and benefits; • Focuses on what matters to the people who use our services • Draws on cost benefit analysis to emphasis social impacts of an organisations activities • Measures change in way that can inform decision making at an organisational level to: • Reduce inequality • Prevent environmental degradation • Improve well-being • Adjusts for outside influences when valuing at an organisational level: • Deadweight: A measure of the outcome that would have happened even if the activity had not taken place. • Attribution: An assessment of how much the outcome in question was caused by the contribution of other organisations or people • Displacement: An assessment of how much the outcome displaced other outcomes.

This Way Home Project • Objective of the Project: • To establish a new collaborative supported service model that seeks to address the needs of homeless and at risk of homelessness people within Newcastle • The Outcome Star • The outcome star is used as a tool for measuring change for people who are homeless, temporarily housed or at risk of becoming homeless. • Ten Key Areas assessed with a focus on independent living and self-reliance. It covers a wide range of areas including managing a tenancy, mental health and motivation and responsibility.

The KBT Hub • Objective: • To facilitate greater resident ownership, participation and community engagement and develop a sustainable resident volunteer program to support residents in the KBT Neighbourhood • The Community Star • Focuses on feeling at home, safe and connected to others within one’s local neighbourhood. It also captures personal changes such as new skills and healthier living. It was developed for use in community development projects

Outcome areas: The Star, quiz and survey postcard gather measure progress within six outcomes: • Feeling safe • Getting to know people • Making a difference • Building a healthy lifestyle • Making greener choices • Confidence and learning • These outcome areas are all underpinned by a journey of change.
