  5. When should I take the exams? Fee waivers available if student qualifies for free or reduced lunch

  6. Why Honors? Honors and Advanced Placement Classes *Extra grade point given in GPA calculation if C or better. It is mandatory to take the AP exam if you want to earn the extra grade point Honors (H) – Algebra II, Chemistry, English 9, English 10, Geometry, Social Studies 9, Trigonometry/Math Analysis, *Chemistry,and *Physics Advanced Placement (AP) –*all receive extra grade point Biology, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, English Language & Composition, English Literature & Composition, European History, French Language IV, French Literature V, Spanish Language IV, Spanish Literature V, Physics, Studio Art, US History, and Macroeconomics/US Government

  7. Why Build A Resume • Utilize the summer to volunteer • Take a summer program • Showcase hobbies • Participated events and opportunities • Get a job • Accomplishments Commitment over time is key

Activities- What kind of activities are important?Keep a record of all your activities! • Quality participation and commitment in one or few activities – show passion • Service to the community – volunteering, internships, awards/honors • President or officer in a club or organization • Captain/Co-Captain of an athletic team • Employment • Hobbies *Always have a balance between academics & activities

  9. Activities Participation in activities throughout grades 9-12 is most important. Community Service is…. • A graduation requirement – 10 hours are required in 9th & 10th grade. 20 hours are required in 11th & 12th *Must be completed each year or an additional 10 hours will be added to each year missed. • For the good of the world community • For colleges and scholarship –competitiveness Visit: usaservice.org & cityofculver.org Dosomething.org

Why you should visit colleges: • A campus visit is your opportunity to get a firsthand view of a college (The Vibe) • To really get a real feel of what college will be like • walk around the quad • visit the library or libraries • Visit the Financial Aid Office • Visit the Counseling Office • Visit the Career Services Center • Student Union • What is the social scene like? What activities do they have available? • What does the Freshmen Class look like and do they return the following year? • What’s the average class size? Sit in on a class. • Visit the dorms • Gather information on special programs • What Majors, Minors, and Specializations do they have? • Check out the cafeteria • Make a contact with a university admissions representative. Get a business card • Get on their radar – don’t be a stealth visitor North East College Trip – see Ms. Mackey for information Tours are FREE – Schedule your tours online with the colleges of your Choice

Fly In Programs • most colleges offer weekend programs where students can spend a couple nights on campus • get to know the students and faculty who bring the college to life. • Many colleges can assist students that have financial need. • Assist with travel expenses • Applications deadlines vary but can be as early as August 1st

Western Undergraduate Exchange • Through WUE, students in western states may enroll in 150 two-year and four-year college institutions at a reduced tuition Participating States: • Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming No separate WUE Application! • Apply directly to the college of your choice • Entrance requirements for WUE applicants are set by each participating institution. • Requirements typically include minimum GPA and/or ACT/SAT score requirements; some institutions require higher GPAs and test scores for WUE students. • Most WUE institutions do not require applicants to demonstrate financial need to receive the discounted rate.

(commonapp.org) • University of California opens August 1st (universityofcalifornia.edu/apply) • California State University opens October 1st – Nov. 30 (csumentor.edu) Use college application organizer available on the CCC website

  14. START YOUR COLLEGE STATEMENTS!!! • Gather all colleges prompts/essay questions. • Cut and paste into a word document • Color code questions • Begin to brainstorm • Draft, draft and redraft • Have your essay reviewed by teacher, counselor or parents
