  3. Logging in to Handshake • Sign in to my.unt.edu. • On the home page, scroll down to the Jobs section • Click on ‘Eagle careers powered by Handshake’ • Log in to Handshake OR http://unt.joinhandshake.com https://studentaffairs.unt.edu/career-center/eagle-careers/students-and-alumni

  6. Creating Your Resume

  7. Resume Facts • The average time spent by recruiters looking at a resume is 5 to 7 seconds. • In 2000, only 22% of resumes were submitted via email or posted on the web. • Since 2014, over 90% of resumes are now online or sent via email.

  8. Resume Appearance • Font Size: 10-12pt font size • Font Style: Professional (EX. Arial, Times New Roman) • Margins: .5 to 1inch • Length: One page • Choose a resume style that best fits your experience: • Chronological (primary format) • Functional/Skills (secondary format)

Resume Appearance (Cont’d.) • Consistency: Font, alignment, bolding, etc. should be the same throughout • Clarity: Be specific about your contributions by elaborating on your professional skills • Accuracy: double-check spelling, punctuation, grammar and accuracy of information • Relevance: Tailor your resume to your desired position PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD, PROOFREAD

Two Types of Resumes Chronological: Highlights responsibilities that you had while at a specific job, internship or class project. • Students who choose this format should have had at least 2 experienceswith responsibilities that pertain to their area of career interest, or one job with extensive career-related experience • Preferred format Functional: Highlights your skills and abilities that you have acquired through various experiences. This format is for students with little to no experience that pertains to their area of interest.

Content Areas Your resume should include the following content areas: • Header with Contact information, name, city and customized LinkedIn URL (if applicable) • Professional Profile • Core Competencies • Technical Skills • Language Skills if applicable • Education • Experience (Chronological)/Professional Skills (Functional) • Employment History (Functional) • Leadership, Campus, & Community Involvement

Creating a Header • The header of your resume is the first thing that employers will read about you so keep it simple • Include customized LinkedIn URL (if applicable) • Use a professional/institutional email • Use bold lettering and a larger font to draw attention to your name Nita Job City, State Phone number (Customized LinkedIn URL) nita.job@my.unt.edu _______________________________________________________________________________________

Objective • Professional Profile: A brief summary of your professional skills, personal strengths and long-term career goals. • Senior Marketing major at the University of North Texas planning to graduate in May 2019. Hardworking individual who thrives in diverse, fast-paced environment and values group collaboration in a professional setting. Seeking an internship in the logistics field starting May 2019. • Objective: Focuses more on the position you are seeking as opposed to the skills you can bring to the company. • “Electrician with 8 years of experience in the electrical engineering field. Seeking a full time position as a foreman.”

Seeking an internship in the logistics field to build upon current skillset. Logistics and Supply Chain Management major with the creativity and skills to effectively solve problems and complete tasks. Possesses experience in the functional aspects of logistics including sales, purchasing, distribution, and finance. Seeking an entry level position in the logistics field.

Core Competencies • Core competencies are the soft, transferrable skills, or personal strengths you possess. • Make sure you can support each competency with strong examples in the event that an employer asks you to provide one. In other words, don’t just list random skills that you have no experience with. • This section should include at least 3-4 skills CORE COMPETENCIES Analytical | Verbal Presentation Skills | Strong Written Communication Skills | Customer Service

Technical Skills • Technical skills are any computer/software skills you have • For the purpose of this assignment, it is okay to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. However, employers will expect you to already have these basic skills so you will eventually want to replace them with more advanced ones. • This section should include at least 2-3 skills TECHNICAL SKILLS Microsoft Excel | SAP Software | Adobe Photoshop | VBA Programming | Outlook Language Skills: Bilingual Spanish and English

Bullet Points continued • SOAR Method • Statement of Action- What did you do? • Occurrence of Action- Daily, weekly, monthly • Amount of Action- 19, 50 or over 100 • Results- Increased, decreased, saved, taught • Example: • Statement- Trained new wait staff • Occurrence- Trained new wait staff on monthly basis • Amount- Trained over 15wait staff on a monthly basis • Results- Trained over 15 wait staff on a monthly basis which increased customer satisfaction and sales of new menu items 3 quarters in a row

Professional Skills (Functional ONLY) • Professional skills are similar to core competencies in that they are basic, transferrable skills that you have substantial experience with. • Include at least 2-3 skills, each should be supported by 2-3 strong examples of times you have used that skill in the work place, academics, leadership roles, etc. • Do not use personal pronouns (I, my, we, me, etc.) • PROFESSIONAL SKILLS • Customer Service Experience • As an orientation leader, promotes and provides a friendly and welcoming environment for incoming students and guests • Attentive listener to guests’ concerns and ability to identify and resolve conflict in a professional manner • Assesses each individual’s needs in order to provide customers with the right products and an unforgettable shopping experience

  27. Keep in Mind… 1) Keep it Organized:Make your resume flow. Avoid using resume templates because they can often times be too over the top and distracting. Keep it simple! 2) Honesty is the best policy:Act with integrity and be honest when building your resume.

CV’s • CV Purpose • In the United States, a resume is a short (usually one page) summary of education and work experience, whereas a Curriculum Vitae, also known as a CV, is a longer document with more academic and professional details. Oftentimes a CV refers to an academic resume. However, in Europe and in some other countries, resume and CV are used interchangeably. Used in pursuing academic and research opportunities rather than the resume, which is briefer and geared toward private industry jobs.
