  1. IsaiahPart 4 – Fear They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. 1:27

  2. 11 This is what the Lord says to me with his strong hand upon me, warning me not to follow the way of this people: 12 “Do not call conspiracy    everything this people calls a conspiracy;do not fear what they fear,    and do not dread it.13 The Lord Almighty is the one you are to regard as holy,    he is the one you are to fear,    he is the one you are to dread.14 He will be a holy place;    for both Israel and Judah he will bea stone that causes people to stumble    and a rock that makes them fall. And for the people of Jerusalem he will be    a trap and a snare.15 Many of them will stumble;    they will fall and be broken,    they will be snared and captured.”

  3. 16 Bind up this testimony of warning    and seal up God’s instruction among my disciples.17 I will wait for the Lord,    who is hiding his face from the descendants of Jacob.I will put my trust in him. 18 Here am I, and the children the Lord has given me. We are signs and symbols in Israel from the Lord Almighty, who dwells on Mount Zion. The Darkness Turns to Light 19 When someone tells you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living?20 Consult God’s instruction and the testimony of warning. If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn. 21 Distressed and hungry, they will roam through the land; when they are famished, they will become enraged and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God. 22 Then they will look toward the earth and see only distress and darkness and fearful gloom, and they will be thrust into utter darkness.

  4. A Word for the Prophet • The Prophets needed to hear from God as much as the people they delivered God’s word to • Isaiah’s ministry had been ‘successful’ thus far • Now King Ahaz is in place and he’s not listening to what Isaiah has to say • As things go awry, Isaiah needs affirmation himself

  5. Fear – Founded in Failure • If there were a performance management review conducted for Isaiah at the time of Ahaz there would be some disappointing results in terms of successful outcomes • Isaiah will likely begin to doubt himself in this process • The public may begin to blame Isaiah as Assyria dominates surrounding lands as God told Isaiah it would happen in Ch.7 • Fear builds when failure seemingly surrounds us

  6. God’s Instruction to Isaiah • God speaks to Isaiah to remind him that the failure is not his, that he shouldn’t listen to the conspiracies around him • He instructs him to do two things • Fear God • Empower those who will listen

  7. Fear of God • Fearing a God of love seems unnatural • A holy or reverent fear of God is not about oppressive subjugation, it is about recognising his ability to destroy his creation and instead he has mercy and makes his promise to liberate and bless those who put their trust in him

  8. Teach those who will listen • The effectiveness of teaching does not come when trying to persuade everyone of what you know to be true. You spend too long convincing those who will not listen and the ones want to will end up not being taught at all • If Isaiah teaches his disciples then the message will not be lost
