  1. Social studies “The Five Perspectives” 5 different ways of looking at the people, geography, history, and cultures of our country and world.

  2. What is Social Studies? • Social studies is the study of geography, economics, government, citizens, and how all those work together to make a country.

  3. Why is Social Studies Important? • It is important to know how your country is ran to make sure all are treated fairly and that all citizens have a say. (Politics) • It is important to know how the government helps people in times of disaster and how it maintains our country’s infrastructure. (Government) • It is important to know how historical events have shaped our country to what it is today. (History) • It is important to understand how a country can provide for all its citizens’ needs. (Economics) • It is important to know the major landforms of your nation and how they affect life in our country. (Geography)

The Five Social Studies Perspectives • Civic-Political: how do people and the government interact? • Social-Cultural: how are societies organized and how do those cultures mix and interact? • Historical: how have events shaped our country? • Economic: how are we organized to meet the needs of our citizens? • Geographic: how do our landforms and locations affect our lives?

  5. Civic-Political: The Government & The Citizens • How does our government help citizens? (Turn and Talk: What does our Government provide?) • How do people in the government get their jobs? • What is the job of our government?

Social-Cultural Perspective: Social Groups and Cultures • What are some of the many culture groups in the United States? • (Turn and Talk: What are some cultural groups in our country?) • How do these cultural groups interact? • How is our society organized? • What pieces of culture are shared amongst these groups? • How do our citizens help each other out? (Drives, relief efforts, charity)

Historical – How have past events shaped our country and lives? • Why is it important to study history? “Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.” • What are some important historical events that have happened in our country? (turn and talk) • What is happening today that will go down in history? • Who are some famous Americans in our history? • Can you place these historic events?

  9. The Economic Perspective – How does our country make sure citizens get what they need? • How do we decide how much everything costs? Supply and Demand • What happens when there is a high demand but a low supply for a product? Scarcity • How do natural disasters affect supply and demand? Earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornadoes…. (Turn and talk)

  10. Geography – the study of landforms and locations • Knowing all 50 states and where they are. • What are some natural landformsthat you would find in the US? (Turn and talk) • How does where you live affect what your life is like? (Turn and Talk) • Desert, near the ocean, on the plains, in the mountains, north, south, cities vs the country

Fifth Grade Social Studies • This year we will be looking at the Civil War through the 5 perspectives: • Civic-Political – how did politics and arguments about how to run the USA influence the start of the civil war? • Social-Cultural – How did different groups (northern abolitionists, slaveholders, slaves) interact? • Historical - How did the Civil War change our country? • Economic – How did the differences in economics between the north and south affect the outcome of the war? • Geography – How did the location of the states help decide the winner of the Civil War?
