Cultures and Lifestyles of Latin America Latin America has a diverse history that has contributed to its cultural development over the years Religion When the Spaniards and the Portuguese came to Latin America they brought Roman Catholicism Priests that accompanied the conquistadors worked to convert Native Americans to Christianity Roman Catholic church remains strong in Latin America today, but does not have the influence it once did Church leaders used to favor the wealthy and now support the poor and oppressed In recent years they have fought for improvements in education and health care

    3. Education Education in Latin America remains a challenge The literacy rate is low in many countries More than ˝ the teachers don’t even have teaching degrees Education has been improving, in the past only the wealthy went to school, now it is free up to 12 years

The Arts For hundreds of years the arts of Latin America were dominated by European standards Today’s Latin American artists have developed unique styles, many which reflect their diverse ethnic heritages Native Americans produced the earliest Latin American art forms Built temples decorated with murals and mosaics

    5. Life and Leisure Latin Americans place great emphasis on social status and family life, more specifically the extended family A person’s quality of life depends on social class, nationality, and place of residence A large gap exists between the lower class and upper class, however Latin Americans enjoy sports, especially futbol, or soccer Also, a traditional favorite among many Mexicans and Cubans is jai alai, a fast paced game much like handball Other Latin American pastimes are musical events, dances, theater, movies, and parties
