  1. NPHS Science Department It’s time to register for classes. What should I take?

  2. College Prep- traditional flow chart Physics-CP (need have successfully completed Alg 2 first) Chemistry- CP Biotechnology-CP (need C or better in Bio & ChemCP) Geoscience-CP Biology-CP Marine Science-CP(need C or better in Bio CP) Anatomy & Physiology-CP (need C or better in Bio CP) Biology-S For all of the above: take Junior &/or Senior Year Cannot go straight to 4-year college

  3. Chemistry- CP • Studies chemical reactions & the factors that influence their behavior • Atomic & molecular structure • Bonding patterns • Conversion of matter & Stoichiometry • Gases (Go hot air balloons!) • Nuclear chemistry • Acids & Bases (Why is your soda bubbly? Household cleaners are bases?!?) • Thermochemistry (How do candles work anyway? The metal on my desk feels colder than the wood- why?) • Yes, there will be math.

  4. Marine Science- CP (NOT Marine Biology in Course Directory!) • Study abiotic & biotic components of a marine ecosystem • Chemistry of the ocean • Geology of the ocean • Taxonomic Groups (Who knew there were so many invertebrates?) • Marine ecology • Ocean resources • Human impact on the ocean • Dissections

  5. Anatomy & Physiology- CP • Study of both the structure & function of different human body systems • Ex: What is the internal structure of human muscle cells (anatomy)? How does this structure lead to/allow for the muscle to contract (physiology)? • Examples of Body Systems: • Skeletal System • Nervous System • Excretory System • Digestive System • Reproductive System • Immune System • Dissections

  6. Biotechnology- CP • Did you ever want to make your own cheese? • Have you ever made your own apple juice or root beer? • What is DNA origami? • Have you ever seen bacteria that glow? If this sounds intriguing to YOU…….check out the new class being offered at NPHS next year! Biotechnology – using technology to manipulate DNA • Uses tools from chemistry and biology to manipulate DNA in order to study or solve problems, especially human diseases • Study how biotechnology companies operate • Drug development • Clinical trials • Delivery to patients (quality assurance) • Ethical issues of biotechnology and impact on society

  7. Biotechnology- CP • Learn the latest in “hands on” lab techniques: • Recombinant DNA technology • Genetic engineering • Separation and purification of DNA and proteins • Microbial cultures (sterile technique) • Micropipetting • Pouring agarose gels http://multivu.prnewswire.com/mnr/amgen/43953/ Class Prerequisite: to be determined by School Board; we strongly recommend a B- or better in CP Biology

  8. Biotechnology- CP

  9. Physics- CP • Do you want to learn why you are pulled to right side of the car if you turn left? • Why does it takes 365 days to go around the sun?? • Have you wondered how to break a glass with your voice? • Would you like to learn rocket science & launch a rocket? • Completed Algebra 2 with a B- is a MUST!  Chemistry (grade of C or better) is strongly recommended.

  10. Honors- traditional flow chart IB Bio or IB Chem (need B- or better in Chem H, BioHand IB Year 1) 12th grade Chemistry- H Biology- H IB year 1 (Chem/Bio) 11th grade B- or better &/or AP Physics (11th/12th)*need math analysis AP Environmental Science (11th/12th) Marine Science- CP Anatomy- CP Biotechnology- CP Physics- CP Biology- CP Cannot go into IB; follow CP pathway
