  1. Figures of Speech Euphemism & Oxymoron

  2. Euphemism: • 1. the substitution of a mild, indirect, or vague expression for one thought to be offensive, harsh, or blunt. • 2. the expression so substituted: "To pass away" is a euphemism for "to die."

  3. Examples of Euphemisms There are more euphemisms for death/dying than anything else so lets think of some: • Kick the bucket • Asleep with Jesus • Dearly departed • Bit the big one • Bitten the dust • Croaked • Sleeps with the fishes • Met one’s maker • Pushing up daisies • Put on the wooden overcoat • Six feet under • Deceased • Ceased to be • Is no more

  4. Now You! It’s your turn. I’ll give you a word, and you tell me as many euphemisms for that word as you can think of: • Going to the bathroom • Obesity • Madness

  5. Oxymoron Oxymoron: a figure of speech by which a location produces an incongruous, seemingly self-contradictory effect, as in "cruel kindness" or "to make haste slowly.“ • boneless ribs • beyond infinity • bitter sweet • controlled chaos • dress pants • Old news • positively wrong • Jumbo shrimp • young adult • pianoforte • one hundred percent chance • mud bath • monopoly • ill health
