  4. Plate Movement: • 2. Plate tectonics: A theory developed in the 1960’s that combined continental drift and seafloor spreading. • 3. Plates: Earth’s crust and part of the upper mantle are broken into sections.

  5. Composition of Plates: • 4. Lithosphere: Crust and upper mantle, rigid layer, 100 km thick, less dense • 5. Asthenosphere: Plastic-like layer under the lithosphere where the plates float and move around.

  7. Plate Boundaries • There are 3 basic ways that plates interact: collide, pull apart or move past each other.

  8. Divergent Boundaries • 7.Boundary between two plates that are moving apart. Most often cause: rifts, volcanoes. • 8.Examples include the East Africa rift in Kenya and Ethiopia, and the Rio Grande rift in New Mexico.

  9. Convergent Boundaries: • 11. Boundary between two plates that are moving together. Most often cause: trenches, mountains. • 12. Examples include: Mariana Trench, Andes Mountains

  10. Transform Boundaries • 15. Boundary between two plates that are moving past each other. • 16. Example include: San Andreas fault, New Madrid fault

  11. What Causes Plate Tectonics? • 18. Convection current: The cycle of heating, rising, cooling and sinking that takes place inside the earth is one known cause for plate movement. • 19. Moving mantle material: Transfer of heat inside the Earth provides energy for plates to move.

  12. Features of Plate Tectonics • 20. Plate tectonics cause the following features on Earth: mountains, volcanoes, trenches, ocean basins, faults, etc. • Scientific methods are now available to test the movements of plates.
