  1. DINALEDI SCHOOL PROJECT PRESENTATION TO PORTFOLIO COMMITTEE 14 SEPTEMBER 2011

  2. BACKGROUND Mathematics and science performance remain vital to job creation, economic growth and prosperity. For this reason, The Action Plan to 2014 underpins the improvement of mathematics and physical science as one of its primary goals. In addressing this goal the Department of Basic Education (DBE) will continue to promote excellence in both Mathematics and Science education. Mathematics and Science Improvement Strategy

  3. A very serious problem experienced in South Africa is that there are not enough learners leaving the school system with good mathematics and physical science results. This has caused skills shortages in the economy, particularly in areas like medicine and financial management. Presently around one in seven young people leave school with a Grade 12 pass in mathematics. The number is a even lower for physical science. STATING THE PROBLEM Mathematics and Science Improvement Strategy

  4. The aim is to increase this to around one in five by 2014 and one in three by 2025, for each subject. To this effect , Government has for a number of years been paying special attention to improving mathematics and physical science results in Grades 10 to 12. An important programme of government is Dinaledi, which started in 2001. In 2007 this programme was expanded so that it covered almost 500 schools. Recent evaluations by experts have found that the additional training and resources going to Dinaledi schools did make a difference to Grade 12 results, especially in schools in poorer areas. The challenge is to improve the Dinaledi approach further and to include more schools. STRATEGY Mathematics and Science Improvement Strategy

  5. Targets of the Action Plan Increase the number of learners in Grade 3 who by the end of the year have mastered the minimum language and numeracy competencies for Grade 3. Increase the number of learners in Grade 6 who by the end of the year have mastered the minimum language and mathematics competencies for Grade 6. Increase the number of learners in Grade 9 who by the end of the year have mastered the minimum language and mathematics competencies for Grade 9. 4 . Increase the number of Grade 12 learners who become eligible for a Bachelors programme at a university. 5 Increase the number of Grade 12 learners who pass mathematics. 6. Increase the number of Grade 12 learners who pass physical science. 7. Improve the average performance in mathematics of Grade 6 learners. 8. Improve the average performance in mathematics of Grade 8 Mathematics and Science Improvement Strategy

  6. The number of Dinaledi schools by province and year intervals

  7. Mathematics Passes 2010

  8. Total Number of learners passing Mathematics in Dinaledi schools

  9. 2009 to 2010 learners passing Mathematics at 50% and above in Dinaledi schools vs national

  10. Total number of learners enrolling and passing Physical Science in 2010

  11. The number of learners enrolling and passing Physical Sciences in Dinaledi schools

  12. 2009 to 2010 learners passing Physical Science at 50% and above in Dinaledi schools vs national

  13. Top up to 7 Textbooks for each learner in Grades 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 learners • Mobile Science laboratories to 300 Dinaledi schools without labs and science kits to  500 Dinaledi Schools • Mathematics kits for 500 Dinaledi schools • 300 ICT laboratories in Dinaledi schools without ICT Labs • Televisions that can receive education TV Broadcasts and solutions installed in 500 Dinaledi schools • 50 computers in each of the 500 schools • Mathematics, Physical Science and English FAL teaching and learning software at 500 Dinaledi Schools • 2000 teachers trained on content knowledge in mathematics , physical science and English FAL • Distribution to 500 Dinaledi schools of a diagnostic tool to assess, measure and address learning and teaching deficiencies in mathematics, physical science and English FAL • Capacity development of principals in 90 Dinaledi schools achieving below 60% pass rate in the NSC examinations • Grade 8, 9 and 10 learners in 500 Dinaledi schools trained and supported to participate in Mathematics and Science Olympiads EXPECTED OUTPUTS 2011/12 Mathematics and Science Improvement Strategy

  14. RECOMMENDATIONS • Reconfigure the Dinaledi Schools Project as Centres for Excellence in Mathematics and Science around which to further strengthen maths and science in schools • A revised MST Improvement Strategy to provide a clear plan that addresses key challenges noted in mathematics and science teaching in schools • The strategy to provide a broad framework for guiding the system and partners towards improving maths and science Mathematics and Science Improvement Strategy
