  2. PROJECT PROPOSAL

  3. Identification Of The Needs To Develop The Major Design Project

  4. When deciding what to do for my MDP, I had a couple of main ideas. The major three were; a new school uniform for our school, a range of hand made jewellery (possibly for the yr12 formal), or a magazine for teens. After a lot of thought considering the pros and cons of these three ideas, I finally decided on the magazine idea because English is one of my strengths. I also picked this idea because in the future I would like to get a job as a journalist for a newspaper or a magazine editor so I feel that this project may help me achieve those goals.

  5. The magazine that I would design would be a magazine for both boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 19. This magazine would be a local magazine, largely focused on music, entertainment and local bands. I have decided to call the magazine “Apathy”. I think that this title reflects most teen’s attitudes to life. The magazine may include things such as; horoscopes, music reviews, concert reviews, movie reviews, local band articles and interviews, a space for submission of art and writing, a “letter to the editor” page. I aim for this magazine to be a free, circulating magazine printed on recycled paper.

  6. My motivation for this project is the problem that I can’t find a magazine that suits my taste and needs and I also feel that the content of most teen magazines is very poor and I wish to improve that. My magazine won’t have celebrity gossip, body image, new diets or anything that can have a negative impact on teens. I aim to create a magazine that suits the reality that they are faced with teens as well as entertaining them.

  7. If all goes to plan, this magazine will be used and read by teens between 13 and 19 year olds. I myself am included in this target group and I will do research and surveys to discover what my target group wants in a magazine. My audience will decide how often they feel this magazine should be brought out when the first survey is put out.

  8. AREAS TO BE INVESTIGATED

  9. Before I commence the construction of “Apathy”, I will need to do some investigation using certain methodologies. The areas of investigation will be: • The wants and needs of my target group. This is completely up to the target group and so I will conduct surveys to find out what it is that these teens would like. • How I am going to construct the magazine. I will need a computer program that is suited to the kinds of things that will need to be done. The program will need to be able to handle pictures well and it must be compatible with professional printing equipment so that when the magazine is finished it can be printed easily. To find this program I can use the Internet and human resources. • The cost to get the magazine professionally printed. I will need to contact a couple of different printing businesses and find out the cost of getting my magazine printed professionally. This will be done by means of human resources. • The resources that are available to me, human and non-human. Again I will need to research to find out what resources I have so that I can produce the best quality of work possible.

  10. The survey I will use to determine the wants and needs of the intended audience will look something like this. 1)      Gender? 2)      Age? 3)      Taste in music/favourite bands? 4)      What is your opinion of teen magazines at the present? 5)      What changes would you make if you could? 6)      What kind of features would you want in magazine? (eg, horoscopes, movie reviews, current affairs, letters to the editor etc) 7)      What kinds of local information would you like to see in this magazine? (eg, local bands, dance parties, festivals) 8)      How often would you like the magazine to be published? (eg, what amount of time should the magazine cover, 2 weeks, 4 months, 1 month, 1 year) 9)      The best medium for the magazine. (eg bound paper, website)

  11. The boundaries and limitations of this project are: • Time- I only have approximately three terms to complete this project. I will lose some of this time due to holidays, exams, assessments and periods of time spent away from home and the resources needed to make progress on this assignment. • Money- I would be reluctant to spend more than $60 on this assignment. The only time I will spend money will be in the final printing stage. • Experience- I have never done anything like this before and so everything will need to be learnt form scratch. To over come this limitation I will try to gain knowledge and skill from human resources I may find. Non-human resources can also give a boost to my understanding. • Resources- I don’t have many human resources for this project yet but the surveys I will do will help a lot to decide on the projects final direction. There are many resources on the Internet that have already helped me gain information and a better understand of the genre in which I will be working.

  12. When designing this magazine there are a couple of factors I will need to consider. These are the size of the magazine, it must be convenient o carry or to put in a bag, the amount of pages that is appropriate for the type of magazine that it will be, and the thickness and quality of the paper. This will rely on the cost allowed for the magazine to be made and what is practical. The possibilities for this project are that the magazine could be professionally printed, a local bands photo could be on the front cover, and for photos inside I can use photos of my peers.

  13. Criteria To Evaluate Success

  14. For this product to be successful, it will need to be desired by the target group because it suits their needs. I would like this magazine to be environmentally friendly but the following are more important; The magazine will need to be easy to read (the fonts will need to readable and the colours of the font must also be bearable), convenient to size (I predict that this wont be A3, probably A4 or maybe A5) and the magazine need to be aesthetic and eye catching. These qualities will be assured by means of another survey to evaluate the success of the final product.

  15. Qualities to evaluate for success (from most important to least important): • The quality of the content will need to suit the needs and wants of the target audience. • Functional qualities, for example the page size and materials that the magazine is made from. • Aesthetic qualities, the font, colour and choice of pictures. • I would like the magazine to be environmentally friendly

  16. Project Management

  17. Action plan: Project realization ~Evidence and application of practical skills. ~Consideration of the practices in industrial/commercial settings as they relate to the MDP. Project proposal ~Identification and exploration of the need. ~Areas of investigation. ~Criteria to evaluate success. Project management ~Action and time plan. ~Finance plan. ~Selection and use of ideas and resources. Evaluation ~Record and application of evaluation procedures throughout the MDP. ~Analysis and evaluation of functional and aesthetic aspects of the design. ~Final evaluation of the project with respect to the project proposal and the projects impact on society and the environment. ~Relationship of the final product to the project proposal. Project development ~Evidence of creativity. ~Consideration of design factors relevant to the MDP. ~Research, experimentation and testing. ~Applications of conclusions. ~Identification and justification of idea and resources. ~Evidence of the testing of design solutions and application of conclusions. ~Use of communication and presentation techniques.

  19. Finance plan: The only time that I will need to spend any money is when the magazine is printed. I don’t yet no how much this will cost. My budget will be anywhere up to approximately $80.
