  2. Do you think that just because your neighborhood is well off, that the people around it are also? • Discuss reality of nearby family poverty • Explain factors of childhood malnourishment and mistreatment • Introduce ideas and methods in order to help impoverished families within the community

  3. My Research Paper • Covered factors in the lives of Underprivileged Children • Product was based on this whole topic • To inspire other people • Give them better understanding of reality • House of Hope alone aids over 70 families with children

  4. Product and Process • “Hitting for Hope” baseball tournament • Familiar with Jr. Grizzlies Baseball organization • Wanted to do something where revenue would be produced easily • Youth baseball tournament involved population of interest

  5. Planning • Held meetings with board of Jr. Grizzlies • Flyers posted online and around parks • Planned concessions, trophy ceremony, ending speech, presentation of check to House of Hope • Calculated entry fees • $395 per team • Integrated food drive into tournament • Gate fee of 2 can food items each time entering park

  6. My Project Facilitator • Mrs. Wendy Graham • Founder of Free Home House of Hope • Helped me with facts about struggles within community • Helped me to learn how to construct charity events

  7. Challenges • Dwight Terry Park needed to be renovated due to failure to drain • Unlevel playing fields • Rain postponed reconstruction of fields and renovation of facilities • Postponement of the park reconstruction was unfortunately inevitable

  8. Overcoming My Challenges • Spoke with county • Tournament can be scheduled at later date • Focusing on everything leading up to the actual event for presentation • Turning focus on showing more people the conditions of what the needy go through in our community • To inspire people to help • Raise awareness

  9. What I Learned • Unexpected things do happen (learned that the hard way) • Spreading workload out is smart and effective • Childhood poverty is real • Exists everywhere • Awareness of the issue needs to be raised • A little help goes a long way

  10. Would I go further with this topic? • Yes • Very passionate about it • Take the issue seriously • Possible careers: charity worker/organizer; overseas missions; public speaker
