WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? • It is a hands-on training program for people who want to work in skilled trades or occupations • Depending on the trade, an apprenticeship could require 3-5 years including 6000-9000 hours of training • The three partners of a successful apprenticeship are; • A student who wants to learn a trade • An employer who needs a skilled worker and is willing to train • The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities who registers the student as an apprentice and registers them for college

  3. 9000 hours Approx. 4 1/2 years 1x8 and 2X10 weeks of schooling exams ELECTRICIAN EXAMPLE OF APPRENTICESHIP • Once a placement with employer has been found the student registers with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities as an apprentice • The student will train with the employer for approximately a year • After a year the student will attend college for educational training (8 weeks) • Return for training with employer • Return to college • Return for training with employer • Return to college • Return for remaining hours of training

  5. Learn a skilled trade while earning cooperative education credits and gaining work experience for a trade!!! COOP AND OYAP • The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program allows students to acquire apprenticeship hours while completing co-operative education credits • For each 110 hours of work students can accumulate a credit through coop • Most students will acquire over 440 hours through coop=4 credits and apprenticeship hours • The coop teacher will recommend a student for OYAP • Students can sometimes continue their apprenticeship with the coop employer

  6. How to find an employer? Do coop!!!-students may get hired as an apprentice Do a Specialist High Skills Major in Construction-student will receive a record card and SHSD diploma making them more marketable to employers Network-find employers through contacts/ parents/neighbours Talk to people in the trade-they are a good source of information Use job search boards/internet (i.e. www.working.canada.com and www.apprenticetrades.ca) Send out resumes

  7. GET WORK EXPERIENCE!!! GO TO SCHOOL!!! Get work experience-start working with an employer as a regular employee and work your way up Get training at college-do a 45 week college program or start a regular program (i.e. Motive Power Technician) Do a Co-op Diploma Apprenticeship Program-combines college diploma and apprenticeship training (i.e. Culinary Co-op Diploma Apprenticeship) Do a Dual Credit Apprenticeship Course at Algonquin (i.e. Dedicated Hairstyling Apprenticeship) CAN’T FIND AN EMPLOYER?

  8. By 2013 approximately 35% of skilled trades people will be retiring. Many experts agree that industry is facing a shortage of skilled trades people. QUESTIONS??????
