  1. UNIT 3 – It’s All About Trig!! Part A – Trigonometry LESSON 1 –TRIGONOMETRY REVIEW WARM-UP: State the three primary trigonometric ratios for . State the following: a) Sine Law b) Cosine Law

Some Reminders… In trigonometry… • SOLVE means to find all the unknown sides and angles. • Angles are expressed using CAPITAL LETTERS. • Sides are expressed using lower case letters • Angle A is opposite to side a, etc… • Make sure your calculator is in degree mode! • Round side lengths to the nearest tenth of a unit. • (Unless otherwise stated in the problem) • Round angles to the nearest degree. • (Unless otherwise stated in the problem) NOTE: Try to use the original (given) information as much as possible…for accuracy! 

  3. The Primary Trigonometric Ratios • The three Primary Trig Ratios are: • The primary trig ratios can only be used with Right-Angled triangles.

  4. The Sine Law • The Sine Law can be used to solve a triangle when given: • The measures of any • 2 angles and 1 side. • The measures of 2 sides • and an angle opposite one • of these sides. I.e. You always need an angle and its opposite side. • The Sine Law:

  5. The Cosine Law • The Cosine Law can be used to solve a triangle when given: S-A-S • The measures of 2 sides and the contained angle. • The measures of all 3 sides S-S-S • The Cosine Law:

  9. Some More Reminders… Angles of Elevation and Depression are always with respect to the horizontal line. Angle of Elevation Horizontal Angle of Depression

  10. Trigonometry Review EXAMPLE 3: From the top of a building 60 m high, the angle of depression of a car on the road is 37º. Calculate the distance from the base of the building to the car.

  11. Trigonometry Review EXAMPLE 4: Solve ABC given A=40º, B=74º and a = 5 cm.

  12. Trigonometry Review EXAMPLE 5: Given the following figure, find the side QT to the nearest tenth of a cm.

  13. Trigonometry Review EXAMPLE 6: Determine the length of BD to the nearest tenth of a metre.

  14. Trigonometry Review EXAMPLE 7: To find the height of the cliff that is inaccessible, a surveyor measures a baseline AC of 400m. In the horizontal plane ABC, A=27º and ACB = 35º. In the vertical plane BTC, BCT=18º. Determine the cliff height to the nearest metre.
