  1. Food Its what you eat!!

  2. Although humans can survive for weeks or more without food you probably wouldn’t want to. • Thankfully most environments are full of food that can meet our nutritional needs.

  3. Why do you get hungry??

  4. Your body gets hungry because it knows that food contains the vitamins and nutrients it needs to keep working. • When you don’t get the nutrients your body needs it becomes sluggish and inefficient.

  5. Carbohydrates- Most common source of energy used by our bodies.(plants) • Protein- Our body needs this to rebuild itself (nuts, meat, dairy, bugs) • Fats- Pure energy (oily fish, grubs)

  6. The best ways to get food in a survival situation is to forage for it. • Collecting bird eggs- best time is early spring • Eating wild plants- a lot of plants look similar so make sure you are eating the correct thing.

  7. Cattail • The spike or shoots can be harvested from spring until summer. They can be eaten raw or boiled. • As we peel the stalk sideways we find the edible inner core.

  8. Acorns • Acorns have a very bitter taste. • Tannin should be removed from the acorns. Reducing the tannic acid from the acorns by boiling them will make them taste better.

  9. Trapping • Trapping is more efficient than hunting but getting food is not a guarantee. • Time consuming- expect to spend time making a quality trap. Don’t waste your time on something that will not work.

  10. Split stick dead fall • Easy to make • No survival • supplies needed.
