  1. 7 key steps for getting your ITSM automation right It's worth looking at the mistakes and successes of others when you are trying to change the status quo or start something new in ITSM. Here are seven steps for ITSM automation (plus the strategy and governance required): Learn the difference between "automation", and "orchestration." The difference between automation and orchestration can be simply described as the setting up of a task to run by itself. Orchestration, on the other hand, is the automated execution and completion of multiple tasks. Think digital workflow or digital process. Consider the return on investment (ROI). Don't automate just bec ause you can.Automate tasks instead to reap a set of known benefits. Automate tasks when the benefits outweigh the cost. This could be speed, operational cost, error reduction, allowing valuable people to do more work or something else. Learn how automation can be orchestrated. Automating repetitive tasks that have predictable variability and high repetition is possible. It can be automated or orchestrated if it can be described, mapped, with predictable outcomes. When possible, try to organize. A password reset is one example of a task that can be automated. However, if tasks are automated without the task being executed in turn, i t is a local optimization. ITSM professionals who have worked in ITSM know the dangers of local optimization. The same goes for automation. Before automating a capability, ensure that it is ready for automation. This includes tasks and processes that are not well -defined or comprehensive. If the

  2. processes are not consistent in delivering the expected results. Or when the processes are not transparent or require manual intervention. Make sure that the appropriate automation tools are available. Failing to use the right technology or using technology that isn't suitable for automation and orchestration can lead to frustration and even failure. Learn and develop the appropriate skill sets Automation is only possible if you have the right people with the right skills. This includes design skills, logical thinking, reasoning, organizational knowledge and many more. Don't attempt to automate your business without the right people. These tips should be of help to your IT department as well as other organizations looking to add automation to their operations.
