  2. Colour – Print Contrast • Light Background, ideally white • Dark Bars, ideally black 

  3. Colour – Print Contrast - TIPS • Solid colours • Avoid reflective colours • A gloss coat might reduce the print contrast • A transparent wrapping diminishes the contrast  

  4. Be Aware - different surfaces absorb ink differently.

  5. Bar Code Width – Magnification • Different magnifications required for all EANUCC bar codes • Dependent on print method • Determine where bar code will be scanned • Consider Industry Requirements

  6. 80% EAN/UPC Magnification 100% 150%Minimum for conveyorised scanning 200%

  7. ITF-14 Magnification 50%Minimum for conveyorised scanning 100% For conveyorised scanning, the HIGHER end of the magnification range is recommended Magnifications down to 25% are applicable for other environments

  8. UCC/EAN-128 Magnification 50%Minimum for conveyorised scanning 100% For conveyorised scanning, the HIGHER end of the magnification range is recommended Magnifications down to 25% are applicable for other environments.

  9. 150%

  10. Nominal Bar Code EAN/UPC Bar Code Height • EAN/UPC bar codes have a nominal (target) size • Nominal bar codes have a fixed relationship between the width and height to enable omni-directional scanning Truncated Bar Code 50

  11. ITF-14 & UCC/EAN-128 - Bar Code Height • For conveyorised scanning height is important • ITF-14 bar code height must be 32mm • UCC/EAN-128 bar code height must be 32mm • For environments other than general distribution minimum heights apply 50

  12. Light Margins / Quiet Zones • Area to the left and right of the bar code • Enable scanner to determine start and end of the bar code • Must keep all graphics, dark colours clear of these areas

  13. 4 1 2 7 8 5 1 2 7 8 3 2 4 1 2 7 8 5 1 2 7 8 3 2 4 1 2 7 8 5 1 2 7 8 3 2 Watch light margins

  14. Print Quality

  15. Print Quality • Clear crisp well defined bars • Watch for voids and smudging • Print quality requires regular ongoing checks

  16. You must ensure that the print quality is of high quality consistently

  17. Location, Location, Location… • Location guidelines apply to all trade items • Consider location of bar code in its final form • Identify any seams or seals that may cover the bar code • Consult the GS1 Australia User Manuals or contact the Technical Help Desk

  18. Location requirements for retail trade items • General recommendation for location is towards the lower right of the back of the product • Lower right of another face is acceptable where the back of the product is unavailable • Base of a product will continue to be acceptable but is NOT preferred

  19. Locate bar code on a minimum of two adjacent sides Minimum of 19mm from either vertical edge (including light margins) * =32mm Location requirements for non-retail trade items * The 32mmmeasurement isfrom the bottom of the bars

  20. 9 6 1 4 1 4 1 0 0 0 8 6 Ask The Package Designer First Bar codes do NOT scan around corners Avoid package seams or seals
