Overview • More Maths Grads – the sequel! • Total resources allocated: £1,515,000 • Advised by a consortium of mathematical sciences bodies • Employing three staff members (IMA 2, MSOR Network 1) • Deliver three macro level projects, with a three themed approach • Funding opportunities available to the HE sector on a competitive basis • Supporting bids to the Hub’s recent call to the Collaboration Fund

Curriculum Innovation Projects Fund • Total resources allocated to the fund: £295,000 • Develop innovative approaches, relevant to one or more of the following themes: • Flexible curricula and provision for part-time learners • Curriculum barriers to widening participation • Employability skills • Active learning • Work-based learning • Employer developed content and employer involvement • Continuing professional development • Assessment • The mathematical sciences in other STEM disciplines • HE Curriculum Advisor to implement and disseminate projects Innovation in HE Curriculum

Call for project proposals for mathematical sciences HE curriculum innovation • First call opened: 12 April 2010 • Competitive bidding process for a fixed £50,000 total for this call • Maximum awarded to successful bids: £5,000 • Funding available to HEFCE and HEFCW funded HEIs to support the transfer and wider adoption of the best practice learnt through the previous work of the More Maths Grads project and the MSOR Network into the wider mathematical HE sector and other STEM subjects • First call closes: 16 May 2010 • Further details and application template available from the MSOR Network website Innovation in HE Curriculum

Regional Hubs • Support mathematics support for STEM in their region • Identify local constituency • Promote and host at least two local events per year • Gather, analyse and report evaluation data • Provide updates for the Network website • Report in the e-newsletter • Contribute to the annual conference Mathematics Support

Competitive Bidding Process – Mathematics Support Provision • Mathematics and/or statistics support provision in a HEI in England and Wales • Funds must directly benefit students (not available to cover the costs of research projects) • Funding available to four HEIs in England and Wales for two years (£10,000 for 2010/2011 and £5,000 for 2011/2012) • Funds must be matched by the host institution Mathematics Support

Overview • Lead by Makhan Singh • Understand what employers want from maths undergraduates • Understand why only 25% of maths graduates enter STEM careers • Continue to improve key skills of STEM graduates • Produce STEM careers booklet; promote STEM careers to maths graduates • Incorporate models of upskilling from level 3 to level 4, for employers/workforce (e.g. OU modules; Maths in Engineering module) • Develop relationships with employers across a wide cross section (e.g. Rolls Royce; Royal Bank of Scotland, British Energy, ABPI, Thales etc) Upskilling the Workforce

Those activities should share equal status with research and academic activities. ‘Business facing’ should be a description with which any higher education institution feels comfortable. Overview • Present mathematical sciences to the public as being at the core of all STEM subjects, not just a stand alone subject • £24,000 allocated to fund a small number of ‘scoping studies’ • Final report detailing how chosen strategy can be implemented by the Spokes, in collaboration with regional partners HoDs & COPS Call
