  2. Shang Dynasty • Calligraphy- A way of drawing characters or symbols to express words or ideas • Over 2,000 characters • Written with a brush and ink on silk, bamboo, or paper

  3. Advances in Technology • Advanced bronzework • Highly decorated artwork • Improved tools • Used kaolin- a clay for making pottery • Learned how to raise silkworms and make silk cloth • Built large palaces, government building, and religious shrines

  4. Similarities between the Egyptians and Chinese burials of rulers? • Both had large and fancy tombs. (Many Egyptian pyramids were tombs for pharaohs) • Both included things that the person would need in their afterlife. Like clothing, jewelry, animals, people, chariots, etc. • Both decorated their tombs with extravagant artwork

  5. Shang Dynasty’s End • In 1028 B.C. the Chou joined with other tribes in western China and overthrew the Shang. • The Chou Dynasty would go on to rule for 800 years
