  1. Universal Safety Precautions, Nose bleeds, and Fractures By: Lizzy, Sam, and Taylor

  2. Safety Precautions • Wear disposable gloves whenever there is a chance of body fluids being present. • Use a plastic face shield or mask with a one way valve when you perform rescue breathing. • Wash your hands with soap and warm water after providing first aid.

  3. Fractures • A fracture is a crack or break in a bone. • Two types of fractures are: • Closed fracture- when the skin stays intact. • Open fracture- where a piece of broke bone sticks out through the skin. This fracture may bleed more heavily. • The only way to identify a fracture is an x-ray.

  4. Signs of possible fracture • Swelling and bruising at injured area. • Pain in the injured area. • Deformity of the injured area. • Difficulty moving the injured area.

  5. First aid for a closed fracture • Stabilized injured area with a sling of splint. Do not try to straighten a bent bone or limb. • Keep the victim still and comfortable. Find medical attention.

  6. First aid for an open fracture • Call 911 immediately. • Cut away clothing from the wound. Do not push the bone back through the skin. • Apply gentile pressure with a large sterile pad to control bleeding. • Cover the entire wound with a sterile bandage or clean cloth. • If the victim needs to be moved before help arrives, first apply a splint to stabilize the injured area.

  7. Nose bleeds • Nose bleeds come from blowing your nose or getting hit in the nose. • When you get a nose bleed you usually don’t have to get medical attention unless its for more than a few minutes. • When a nose bleed occurs have the victim sit down and lean forward so the blood comes out. • Have the victim breathe through the mouth and apply pressure by pinching the nostrils closed for 10 minutes.

  8. Make sure the victim doesn’t cough, spit, or sniff because it could disturb the blood clots that are forming in the nose. • After 10 minutes have them let go of their nose. If its still bleeding apply pressure again for another 10 minutes. • Have the victim rest for a few hours without blowing their nose because it will cause bleeding again. • If the bleeding doesn’t stop or if the victim is having trouble breathing you should call 911.
