Background • Estrella Mountain Community College • Part of Maricopa Community College District • 16,000 students annually • 2 time Aspen Award Winner –top 10% of community colleges nationally • 12+ year relationship with Arizona Public Service and Palo Verde NGS • Nuclear Uniform Curriculum Program school • Sustainable Energy Sector Partnership Funds • Part of Arizona’s SESP grant became available for Get Into Energy Program • Funds for approximately 150 students

  4. Get Into Energy Program – Arizona Style • “Bundled” three GIEP credentials into credit bearing courses • Career and Personal Development (NCRC, SkillsUSA) • Math • Energy Industry Fundamentals (ANSI) • Grant plus other resources would pay • Tuition • Fees • Books

Recruitment • Involved Workforce Investment ONE-STOPS • Maricopa Workforce Connections • Phoenix Workforce Connections • Local High School Joint Technical Education District • WESTMEC • 7 districts and 40 high schools • Employers • Arizona Public Service • APS- Palo Verde NGS • Salt River Project

Activities • Met with Career and Technical Education Directors • Main message: College credits; scholarship; JOBS • Series of Open Houses for students and PARENTS • Main message: JOBS; scholarship; College Credit • Meet with Employers • Industry Tours • Main message: These are the JOBS • Qualify for funds and Register for Class • Main message: Clean background including selective service registration; Academic expectations

Results • Recruited 126 students from local high schools and workforce system • Approximately 65 followed through with qualification and registration • Several deferred to Fall 2012 Semester • 62 students have taken the NCRC to date • 5 Bronze (8%) • 37 Silver (60%) • 19 Gold (31%) • 1 Platinum (1%) • 49 students have taken Energy Employability Skills to date • 35 have scored 75 or higher • 67 currently enrolled in Energy Industry Fundamentals
