The unit aims to encourage students to find ways to reduce their impact on the environment. CONTENTS

  4. Situation Analysis • This unit of work has been designed to teach the importance of waste management to a grade prep/1 class. The class consists of seven boys (3 preps, 4 grade 1’s) and the school is situated in rural Victoria. • The school is well equipped with resources including a projector in the classroom with access to the World Wide Web. Other mentioned resources such as the books are available from the local library. • The students are experienced in working both independently and as a group. The class has some previous knowledge of recycling resulting from school policy and procedures. CONTENTS

Themes/Understandings • Focus Theme : Reduce, Reuse, Recycle • This unit covers the major themes of waste management and minimising our impact on the environment. • Contributing Questions: • Where does waste come from? • Where does waste go? • How can we reduce the amount of waste we produce? • Values and Attitudes: • Students will identify and analyse the following kinds of values: • Personal responsibility for interactions with the environment • Communal responsibility for interactions with the environment • The importance of minimising our impact on the environment CONTENTS

Evaluation tools • Evaluation for this unit of work is determined by using the following methods: • Lessons 3 and 4 contain student worksheets used to determine the learners level of understanding. • Students are required to sort through rubbish and identify the recycle symbol. • Students are observed to see if they are using The 3R’s within the classroom and the school environment.
