  1. Proton - Proton Collisions @ LHC • Switzerland contributes to the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments of the LHC. This involvement started in 1996. A computing centre of type Tier-2 – located at the Swiss National Computing Centre (CSCS) in Lugano – is an additional Swiss participation. ATLAS and CMS jointly discovered the Higgs boson in 2012, which led to the Nobel Prize of 2013. The overall involvement of students in the LHC development and data analysis lead to the completion of 115 master theses and 109 doctoral theses by Oct. 2013. • since 2008 LHC Experiments:ATLAS, CMS & LHCb The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) ATLAS CMS LHCb • With a diameter of 25m and a length of 46m, ATLAS is the largest LHC experiment. Switzerland contributes to: • Superconducting cables and casings for the barrel toroid coils • Silicon strip tracking detector • Calorimeter readout electronics • Event transfer, building and high-level triggers • Online data logging system • Tier-3 data analysis facilities • The “Insertable Pixel Layer”
