  1. What You Need To Know About Medical Marijuana and Its Benefits What You Need To Know About Medical Marijuana and Its Benefits June 14, 2018 Whether you are talking with your co-worker, doctor, parent, or coffee barista, the likelihood is fairly high that any of those you converse with have a favorite strain, preference of product, or strong opinion on the use of marijuana. From recreational to medicinal use, the legalization of cannabis that has occurred in countless states indicates that the plant is here to stay. So let’s talk marijuana health benefits and uses, shall we? Over the past few years, the health and wellness sphere has been teeming with ideas, research, studies, and countless opinions on the subject. From scientists to policy makers, everyone has a word or two to share on the topic. Truth is, cannabis has been utilized for medical use for decades—in fact, it has been referenced for its medicinal properties across cultures for thousands of years. When you look at it that way, modern medicine is playing a bit of a game of catch up, which means our understanding of how it can be used for different ailments and needs is only beginning. While countless studies continue to be conducted, we have already begun to learn and understand just how useful cannabis can be for our body, minds, and overall wellbeing. Whether you are ingesting the drug through edibles and sprays or smoking it using vapes or buds, the uses for marijuana are plentiful. First off, we know that marijuana is incredibly useful for any sort of chronic pain. When cannabis is smoked or ingested it can help to reduce neuropathic pain, which is particularly helpful for cancer patients. CBD-centric products have been known to help reduce inflammation, working to relieve pain for those with lupus, arthritis, and other autoimmune diseases—particularly helping to induce sleep for those patients who have pain that gets in the way of scoring some shut eye. According to a study discussed in the Harvard Health Blog, patients experience “many benefits of CBD, from relieving insomnia, anxiety, spasticity, and pain to treating potentially life-threatening conditions such as epilepsy.”

  2. While cannabis may not be as useful for intense pain (for example, post surgery) it is highly effective for chronic pain that impacts the lives of countless Americans. Better yet, cannabis offers up an alternative to pain relief medication in the wake of the opioid crisis. Far less addictive, it also works as an alternative to NSAIDs like Advil or Aleve, particularly for those who have kidney issues or ulcers. When it comes to treating epilepsy, there have been some incredibly hopeful studies conducted using CBD. In a study recently done by The New England Journal of Medicine, children and teenagers suffering from epilepsy were given CBD to combat the effects of Dravet syndrome—a rare disorder marked by drug-resistant seizures. Scientific American reported that “62 percent of caregivers in the cannabidiol group said their child’s overall condition improved during the trial, compared with 34 percent in the placebo group.” Cannabis is also an incredible muscle relaxant, which has been highly beneficial for those suffering from Parkinson’s disease as it lessens tremors. Multiple sclerosis patients have also seen benefits in reducing pain from muscle spasms. Another health benefit of marijuana is its ability to help reduce anxiety. While too much smoking can cause anxiety, low doses of THC have been shown to have incredible relaxation qualities and help to reduce stress. Cannabis has also been studied with its ability to help combat post-traumatic stress disorder. The naturally occurring cannabinoids in marijuana products help the brain regulate the system that induces fear and anxiety, extending its relaxation and calming effects throughout the whole body and mind. The health benefits of medical marijuana offer up powerful alternatives to medicine for both serious ailments and everyday pains—and that is what makes it such an exciting and interesting path in medicine. Cannot sleep through the night? Try some cannabis. Intense pain? Try some cannabis. Experiencing nausea or just need to relax for the sake of your sanity? Again, try some cannabis. The science around the health benefits of marijuana will only continue to grow. From pain relief and mood boosting to sleep inducing and muscle recovery, there’s a use for cannabis for all of us—and you can be sure that MedMen has something that will strike your fancy.
