  1. Engineering development of automated temperature system ( UA05-CNAG ) Principle Investigator: Dr. Earnest W. Fant, Ph.D.,P.E. Co-Principle Investigator: Dr. Nebil Buyurgan, Ph.D. Graduate Research Assistant: Chaitanya Sannathi Sponsored by : ConAgra Foods

  2. Project Overview • Technical practicality and economic feasibility of the proposed project has been proven. • Implement the previous research entitled “Automated Assessment of a Critical Food Processing Variable”. • Development of the decision model programming for controlling oven belt speed. • Development of the data gathering/keeping to support decision model program.

  3. Project Overview • Development of diagnostics to identify procedural problems and provide solutions for correcting error. • Automated system must handle harsh environment of USDA regulated food processing plant. • Automated system should allow for greater production, improve labor costs, provide better data management, and allow for greater system control

  4. ENGINEERING DEVELOPMENT( phase I ) • Accurate electronic temperature collection/transmission • Data management for record keeping and system control • Decision model for oven conveyor speed which affects internal temperature • Conversion of application development from AML/2 to V+ language

  5. Engineering development( phase i ) • Specialized end effectors. • Self adjusting temperature probing fixture. • Recovery techniques which may or may not require human attendant. • Insuring sanitation procedures. • Develop attendant training. • Defining maintenance procedures.

  6. Installation( phase ii ) • Purchase of a machined-vision robotic arm and other equipment/supplies • Preparation of the physical site in the plant to include safety, sensors, interlocks and utilities • Validate programming of partial system in a laboratory setting before installation

  7. Installation( phase ii ) • Training human attendant and maintenance personnel. • Consultation for installation process. • Assist in validation of process to meet USDA regulations.

  8. Current developments • Transfer of data from temperature measuring system to central computer. • Database management and record keeping system. • Adaptive control system for varying the conveyor belt speed. • Decision model for determining proper conveyor belt speed • Functional system of Automated Temperature Probing.
