  1. Thursday 2-11-2010 Unit 1: Cells, Diffusion & Respiration

  2. (1) Cells • Cell = Basic unit of life. • Types: • Prokaryotic • Eukaryotic

  3. (2) Organelles • Organelle = Specialized membrane structure w/in a cell. • Types: • Nucleus • Endoplasmic Reticulum • Ribosomes • Golgi Apparatus / Body • Mitochondria • Lysosomes

  4. (3) Cell Membrane • Outermost covering of cells. • Cell Wall = Exception. • Structure: • Phospholipid Bilayer • Embedded Protein Channels • Function: • Traffic Control

  5. (4) Diffusion • High  Low…. Until Equilibrium • Concentration Gradient • No Energy

  6. (5) Osmosis • Water • High  Low… Until Equilibrium • Concentration Gradient • No Energy • Semipermeable Membrane

  7. (6) Hypertonic & Hypotonic • Water Solutions • Hyper = [High Solute] • Hypo = [Low Solute]

  8. (7) Active Transport • Low  High…. Against Equilibrium • Against Concentration Gradient • Energy • Protein Channels

  9. (8) Cellular Respiration • Mitochondria • C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP • Energy Transfer: Glucose  ATP • Carbohydrate Metabolism

  10. (9) Homeostasis • Stability • Conditions: • pH  Acids & Bases • Temperature • Water • [Ion]  Electrolytes
