Body Paragraph 1 THESIS: Narrow-mindednessis hurtful to Pocahontas because her tribe has always been peaceful and respectful, and she is now faced with having to put herself in danger in order to fight for her people’s ways,and the only weapon she really has is to try to teach her tribe’s peaceful way of life to the narrow-minded enemy. • Topic Sentence #1: Because Pocahontas comes from a community of people who have always live respectfully with one another, she is shocked and hurt at how the white men are treating her.

Topic Sentence + the FIRST CHUNK • (TS) Because Pocahontas comes from a community of people who have always live respectfully with one another, she is shocked and hurt at how the white men are treating her. (Evidence) Pocahontas and her father’s conversation is rudely intruded upon by the, “the white men who believed the tribe to be completely barbaric and ignorant” (Jones 57). (Analysis 1) In other words, These men have preconceived judgments about the tribe simply because they speak a language they do not understand and they look different. (Analysis 2) I think that, The narrow-mindedness of the white men is shown clearly here because they do not bother to try to get to know the language of Pocahontas’s people, which in itself is ignorant and hurtful.

Notice the Evidence • (Evidence) Pocahontas and her father’s conversation is rudely intruded upon by the, “the white men who believed the tribe to be completely barbaric and ignorant” (Jones 57). • You MUST set up the quote with your OWN words so that you set the scene for the reader! Otherwise the essay will look like this: Pocahontas comes from a community of people who have always live respectfully with one another, she is shocked and hurt at how the white men are treating her. (Evidence) “The white men who believed the tribe to be completely barbaric and ignorant” (Jones 57).

(Analysis 1) In other words, These men have preconceived judgments about the tribe simply because they speak a language they do not understand and they look different. (Analysis 2) I think that, The narrow-mindedness of the white men is shown clearly here because they do not bother to try to get to know the language of Pocahontas’s people, which in itself is ignorant and hurtful. (Transition) As time goes on, Pocahontas is confronted by even more hurtful judgments. (From here you need your second CHUNK + transition.)

  8. Concluding Sentence • The concluding sentence of the first and second body paragraphs wraps up the paragraph’s main idea, then introduces the next topic. • The concluding sentence of the third body paragraph concludes that paragraph and sets up the concluding paragraph.

  9. Example concluding statements For first or second body: • However, even though her tribe has always been peaceful, because of the ignorance of the white men, Pocahontas finds herself in a fighting stance. For third body: • In the end, Pocahontas discovers that going back to her natural ways and defending herself with peace was the right answer all along.
