Making A Difference In Education • Association for Educational Communications and Technology is a national and international professional association(AECT, 2011). • Arkansas Association of Instructional Media is one of the state affiliates of AECT(AAIM, n.d). • Both organizations are dedicated to the improvement of education through the use of technology(AAIM, n.d).

  3. A Look Back At AECT in the 20th Century • Established in 1923 as the National Education Association’s Department of Visual Instruction. • The association was first created by a small group of educators who were dedicated to helping people find a better way to learn. • The name AECT was adopted in the major reconstruction in 1969-1970. • The association’s history in the 20th Century can be broken into six periods. (AECT, 2001, pg1)

  4. 6 Periods of History Of The AECT • Formative Period 1923-1931 • Consolidation Period 1932-1945 • Post-War Growth Period 1946-1957 • Federal Aid Boom Period 1958-1970 • Independence And Dispersion Period 1971-1982 • Computer Impact and Downsizing Period 1983-1999 (AECT, 2001, p.1)

Mission Statement The mission of the Association for Communications and Technology is to provide international leadership by promoting scholarship and best practices in the creation, use, and management of technologies for effective teaching and learning in a wide range of settings. (AECT,2011,p.1)

Goals of the AECT • Define the disciplines and professional activities that comprise the field of educational communications and technology. • Serve and represent professionals in the field and support professional growth. • Advance scholarship and practice that contribute to and enlarge the knowledge base of the field. • Promote policies that ensure the humane and ethical use of educational communications and technology at all levels, from the personal through the international. (AECT, 2011, p.1)

  7. Who are the members of AECT? • Members of the AECT come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Members are found in: • Colleges and Universities • Armed Forces • Museums • Libraries • Hospitals • Any place where educational change is underway. (AECT, 2011) Microsoft Office, 2010

Who Else Makes up the AECT? • Along with the members of the AECT there are 24 state affiliates. • Arkansas Association of Instructional Media is one of the 24. • There are 6 international affiliates of the AECT. • The AECT, with all of the diversity, makes for an outstanding forum for the exchange of ideas. (AECT, 2011)

Divisions Within AECT The AECT has 10 divisions that represent the depth of the organization. • Design and Development • Distance Learning • Graduate Student Assembly • International • Multimedia Production • Research And Theory • School Media and Technology • Systematic Change • Teacher Education • Training and Performance (AECT, 2011)

What Does the AECT Do? • The AECT members carry out a wide range of responsibilities in the study, planning , application, and production of communications media for instruction. • The AECT produces two bimonthly journals, Educational Technology Research and Development and Tech Trends. • The AECT is the national and international representative for the improvement of instruction. (AECT, 2011, p.1)

Interesting Facts • The Association for Educational Communications and Technology is the oldest professional home for this field of interest and has continuously maintained a central position in the field, promoting high standards, in both scholarship and in practice. • The AECT is the most recognized association of information concerning a wide range of instructional and educational technology. (AECT, 2011, p.1)

INTRODUCING AAIM • Arkansas Association of Instructional Media is one of the state affiliates to AECT. • “The Arkansas Association of Instructional Media is a group of professional educators dedicated to the improvement of education through the use of technology and media.” (AAIM, 2011) Microsoft Office, 2010

  14. Purposes and Goals of AAIM “The general purposes and goals of the Arkansas Association of Instructional Media shall be the improvement of education and the public welfare through the use of educational media” (AAIM, n.d., p. 2)

  15. History of AAIM • 1953- organized as AAVA (Arkansas Audio Visual Association) • 1966-Affilicated nationally with what is now the AECT • 1988- Officially change name to AAIM (Arkansas Association of Instructional Media) (AAIM, 2011)

  16. Communication • AAIM members have communication through: • AAIM Listserv • AAIM Website • AAIM Journal (bi-annual) • Professional development conference in the spring providing instruction on technology, media usage, and current innovations in library media (AAIM, 2011)

Scholarships • Heloise Griffon Scholarship • Heloise Griffon is a past director of Audiovisual Services for the Arkansas Department of Education • Established in 1980 • Margaret Crank Amps Scholarship • Margaret Amps was a past media service director for the Arkansas Department of Education. • Established in 2009 (AAIM, 2003 p.44)

Student Media Festival Awards • “The Arkansas Association of Instructional Media sponsors the Student Media Festival each year.” • The Student Media Festival is to recognize media projects created by Arkansas students. • The student must be sponsored by a teacher or librarian. (AAIM, 2003, p. 48)
