  1. A 21st Century Education …Making it happen through Intensive Study Periods

  2. What we know… Schools must prepare students to be able to compete on "...a global, Web-enabled playing field that allows for multiple forms of collaboration on research and work in real time, without regard to geography, distance or, in the near future, even language."

  3. What we know… • Schools must help students develop the six right brain "senses," that complement our left-brain, analytic skills. We need to realize the value of: • not just function, but also design. • not just argument, but also story. • not just focus, but also symphony. • not just logic, but also empathy. • not just seriousness, but also play. • not just accumulation, but also meaning.

  4. What we know… The Seven Survival Skills for Careers, College, & Citizenship in the 21st Century 1. Critical Thinking and Problem Solving 2. Collaboration Across Networks and Leading by Influence 3. Agility and Adaptability 4. Initiative and Entrepreneurship 5. Effective Oral and Written Communication 6. Accessing and Analyzing Information 7. Curiosity and Imagination

  6. But what do most schools still practice?

  7. So Telluride High School has done something about it!!! • We implemented a new program in 2008-2009, called Intensive Study Periods (ISPs). Every student engaged in 3 two-week ISPs. ISPs are designed to create opportunities for our students to develop, practice, and master the 21st Century Survival Skills* that they will need to be successful in their futures. During these ISPs, students work side by side with teachers and community members to intensely study high-interest and rigorous content. These experiences encourage our students to become actively involved in their own learning. Each ISP includes experiential, hands-on learning and requires students to read, write, collaborate, and present their new knowledge and skills back to the community. * See Tony Wagner’s The Global Achievement Gap
