  1. Divisions of the nervous system

  2. Peripheral nervous system: somatic (voluntary) • Includes skin and musculo-skeletal system • Involves a sensory neuron and a motor neuron for each reflex • Outside of CNS • Involves both conscious control and reflexes

  3. Peripheral nervous system: Autonomic (involuntary) • Portion of the PNS that controls organs unconsciously • Innervates heart, some glands, smooth muscle walls of digestive tract, resp. system, excretory system, repro. System, blood vessels

  4. Involves only motor neurons • Composed of two parts: sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems • Most organs are innervated by both

  5. Brian break!!

  6. Sympathetic • Nerves originate in the thoracic-lumbar portion of the spinal cord • Connects spinal cord (CNS) to the organs • It prepares the body to deal with emergency situations (flight or fight response)

  7. Functions of sympathetic • Increased heart rate and breathing rate • Decreased digestion • Dilation of pupils • Increased blood flow to skeletal muscles • Increased release of glucose

  8. Parasympathetic • Nerves originate in the lower spinal cord (sacral area) and brain stem • Vagus is important cranial nerve (regulates heat, lungs, liver, etc • Connects spinal cord and organ • Maintains normal (relaxed) functions or organs (counteracts sympathetic system)

  9. Functions parasympathetic • Promotes digestion • Slows heart rate • Slows breathing • Stores glucose • Constricts pupils
