  1. Population What are the causes of migration? L.O: - To describe the different types of migration. - To understand further why people migrate.

  2. Starter: Look at the table at the top of pg.116. UGG(f)). Explain the difference between ‘natural increase’ and ‘annual growth rate.’

  3. So what is migration?... Definition: Migration – the movement of people to live in a different place. Migration can take place within a country (internal migration) or between countries (international migration). It can have positive effects and negative effects. In some cases migration is needed and in others it needs to be controlled.

  4. Difference between emigration and immigration? • Define the following terms: • What is emigration? • What is immigration? Give an example of these two forms of migration An example of emigration is… An example of immigration is… Use page 116 (UGG(f)) to help you answer these.

  5. What makes people move in the first place? There are many reasons why people move from their homes to somewhere new. They can usually be split into two groups: Push Factors and Pull Factors.

Push factors force people out of the area in which they live and Pull factors attract people into a new area to live Tasks: 1] With the person sitting next to you make a table listing push and pull factors. Push Factors Pull Factors 2] What are ‘obstacles?’ Help:- pg. 116 (UGG(f)) Be ready to feed back your ideas to the class and write down any you missed.

  7. Types of migration… • Voluntary • Economic • Forced • Urban to rural • Rural to urban • Permanent • Temporary • International • Seasonal • Daily Make a copy of Figure 1 on Page 116.

  8. What are the effects of migration? Migration can have many effects on a number of people and groups. There can be negative and positive effects. Create two spider diagrams showing the advantages in one and the disadvantages in the other that arise due to migration both. Use the information in Fig. 5 (pg. 117) to help you. Extension: Colour code you spider diagram with advantages and disadvantages ‘For the host country’ in one colour, ‘For the losing country’ in another and ‘For the migrant and family’ in a third colour.

Task • Briefly state the differences between the following pairs: • international and internal migrations • immigration and emigration • push and pull factors for migration • Voluntary and forced migration. • Put the sub-title ‘ Internal Migration in the UK.’ • Read pg. 120 & 121 UGG(f). • Answer Acts. 1 to 3. Work in pairs for Act. 3 and be prepared to feedback to the whole class. • What causes people to migrate from rural areas to urban areas? • Imagine you are a city official who has been put in charge of dealing with a sudden influx of migrants. How will you cope with the problems that may arise from their presence? Lack of housing, resources, healthcare, education, food, clashes of culture, etc… • Why can forced migration cause more problems than voluntary migration? Explain in terms of social, economic and political impacts.

  10. Activity Change……………… China One Child Policy • Video 53 ‘Granny Wu’ Extension – Imagine you are a member of the Chinese government. Write a speech to your countries population explaining why the policy is needed and how it will be enforced.
