  5. Czar Peter I “The Great” • 1672 – 1725 : Absolute Ruler of Russia • Reformed Russia on “Western” lines

  6. Peter Westernizes Russia • Brought landowners & Orthodox church under state control • Hired European military advisors • Forced nobles to adopt Western fashions & allow women social status • Opened a school for navigation

  7. St. Petersburg • Peter’s new Imperial Capital & window on the west • Built on the Baltic, on land conquered from Sweden • Peter forced peasants to build it, and nobles to live there.
